  • Publication number: 20030156350
Abstract: The present invention relates to an air guide for use in a disc drive such that air flow can be redirected to improve the efficiency of a filter located within the disc drive. Embodiments of the present invention provide for an air guide having air guide surfaces that, in conjunction with sides of the disc drive housing, are configured to channel air flow off a spinning disc, through a filter, and back into the mainstream air flow. The air guide may be formed as an integral unit with either the inner major surface of the cover or of the baseplate, or both, such that the air guide may extend over part of the disc surface and provide an effective channel for air flow without the need for additional assembly processes during manufacture.

  • Publication number: 20030147175
Abstract: The disc drive housing encloses a spindle motor carrying a disc having a data surface. An actuator assembly includes an actuator arm carrying a head. The housing includes a first surface portion adjacent to the data surface of the disc. The housing also includes a plurality of surface portions that define a recess, which allows the actuator arm to move over the data surface of the disc. The plurality of surface portions include a sloped surface portion sloping away from the data surface and preventing wind generated by the disc rotating about an axis from separating from the sloped surface portion. Alternatively, a disc drive includes a housing that defines a recess. The housing encloses a disc mounted on a spindle motor that rotates the disc about an axis and thereby generates wind within the housing. An upstream surface portion and a downstream surface portion of the housing both face toward a data surface of the disc.

  • Publication number: 20030086208
Abstract: Disclosed is an actuator latch for keeping an actuator in a park position when the drive is subject to non-operating shock. Magnetic forces hold the latch in both its latched and unlatched positions. VCM-controlled actuator movement causes the latch to move both into and out of these positions. Airflow generated by spinning discs effect movement of the latch out of the latching position when the drive is powered up.

  • Publication number: 20030081357
Abstract: A printed circuit cable (PCC) connector attachment assembly is provided for a disc drive. The PCC connector attachment assembly includes alignment pins and a compressive member. The alignment pins help to align a PCC connector for assembly and help to prevent lateral movement of the PCC connector with respect to the base deck after assembly. In one embodiment, the alignment pins are located on the PCC connector and align with pinholes provided in a base deck of the disc drive. The compressive member has a height selected such that the compressive member pressingly engages the PCC connector when a cover is attached to the base deck with cover screws. Grounding pads are located between the PCC connector and the base deck, so that the grounding pads provide a grounding path from the PCC connector to the base deck.

  • Publication number: 20030081354
Abstract: A disc drive has one or more data storage discs rotatably mounted on a spindle motor fastened to a base plate, an actuator assembly fastened to the base plate adjacent the discs for movement of transducer heads over surfaces of the discs, and a voice coil motor coupled to the actuator for moving the transducer heads. The voice coil motor has a bottom pole plate spaced from a top pole plate forming a gap in which a voice coil connected to the transducer heads is free to rotate. A latch mechanism for retaining the transducer heads on a landing zone includes a cylindrical latch member with a gap formed by a circular groove between the bottom pole plate and the top pole plate and a pair of spaced apart upright standoffs adjacent one end of the pole pieces that spaces the bottom pole plate from the top pole plate. The spaced standoffs define an opening between the standoffs wherein the width of the opening operably affects magnetic flux across the groove in the latch member.

  • Publication number: 20020075604
Abstract: Disclosed is a magnetic latch for a disc drive. Upper and lower voice coil magnet pole pieces include extensions which bend toward one another, defining a gap therebetween. The gap creates a magnetic field which attracts and holds a disc drive actuator in a park position when the drive is not in use.

  • Patent number: 6400533
Abstract: There is provided an inertial latching system which includes a first latch member configured to engage a second latch member at a junction point. The first latch member includes a latch pivot mounted to the base. One side of the latch pivot extends to form a first arm whilst a balancing mass is found at another side of the latch pivot. Joined to the first arm is a finger which provides a contact line ending in a proximal point. The second latch member has a contact surface which provides a contact point. The inertial latching system is configured such that the ratio of a first length to a second length is smaller than the ratio of a third length to a fourth length.

  • Publication number: 20020039257
Abstract: There is provided a pre-amplifier with a baseplate configured for mounting to an actuator in a disc drive. The baseplate is directly fixed to the actuator at one point, with a damping layer between a second surface of the baseplate and the actuator. The damping layer helps to constrain the baseplate from rotational movement relative to the actuator. Preferably, the baseplate is fixed to the actuator by a grounding pin coupled to the baseplate.

  • Publication number: 20020036867
Abstract: In a disc drive, a voice coil motor is configured to drive an actuator with mainly torque, thereby reducing unwanted vibration of the actuator. The voice coil motor includes a moving coil vertically disposed with respect to a horizontal radial magnetic field provided by a stationary unipolar magnet such that the active portions of the coil are of different radial separation from the actuator pivot.
