  • Patent number: 8553547
Abstract: Systems and methods for transmitting packets over a network of communication channels are provide. A system according to the invention may include first and second nodes in communication with a coax backbone. The first node may further include a retransmission buffer. The system may also include a network access coordinator operative to coordinate access of the nodes to the coax backbone. In a time period at least one first packet is transmitted by the first node to the second node. The first packet may include an indication that retransmission service is applied. The first packet may also include a indication of the length corresponding to the packet. If, during the first time period the packet is not received by the second node, the second node is operative to send a retransmission request to the network access coordinator.

  • Patent number: 8345553
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for reducing latency in coordinated networks. The apparatus and methods relate to a protocol that may be referred to as the Persistent Reservation Request (“p-RR”), which may be viewed as a type of RR (reservation request). p-RR's may reduce latency, on average, to one MAP cycle or less. A p-RR may be used to facilitate Ethernet audiovisual bridging. Apparatus and methods of the invention may be used in connection with coaxial cable based networks that serve as a backbone for a managed network, which may interface with a package switched network.

  • Publication number: 20120174197
Abstract: A first device coupled to a multimedia over coax alliance (MoCA) network may receive, from a second device, an indication that a configuration button on the second device has been pushed. The first device may receive, from a third device, an indication that a configuration button on the third device has been pushed. The first device may allow the second device to be authenticated on the MoCA network if the configuration buttons of the second and third devices were both pushed within a determined amount of time. The first device may prevent the second device from being authenticated on the MoCA network if the configuration button of the second device and the configuration button of the third device were not pushed within a determined amount of time. The indication from the third device may comprise a layer 2 management entity (L2ME) message or a Protocol Information element.

  • Publication number: 20110310907
Abstract: Systems and methods for emulating the bridging of control packets of a first network through a second network. Control packets may be Ethernet control packets instantiating a stream through the emulated bridge. One such protocol is the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1Q protocol. One second network may be a MoCA 2.0 network or a Power Line Communication (PLC) network or any other suitable network. Control packets may be encapsulated as unicast packets according the second network and sent to a control plane node. The encapsulated unicast packets may be indentified and decapsulated by the control plane node. The control plane node may verify access to resources required by the control packet of the emulated bridge. The control plane may send encapsulated packets to the egress nodes of the second network that have sufficient resources to satisfy the control packet requirements.

  • Publication number: 20110205891
Abstract: Systems and methods for policing a Quality of Service (QoS) flow in a MoCA network are provided. The network may include a sending node, a receiving node and a network controller. The network controller may allocate a QoS flow between the sending node and the receiving node. The sending node may request bandwidth for the QoS flow from the network controller. QoS requests have a higher priority than some other requests and may swamp the network. The sending node therefore polices its use of the network. First, the sending node computes a policing time period Tpp. Next the sending node computes a packet and bit allocation for the use of the network during a Tpp. Last the sending node sends reservation requests to the network controller when the allocation of packet or bits has not been exceeded. If any allocation has been exceeded the sending node reserves bandwidth via opportunistic reservation requests which have a lower priority than some other requests.

  • Publication number: 20110080850
Abstract: Systems and methods for providing SRV node selection are provided. The method may include using a node in a home communications network. The communications network may include a plurality of nodes and a coaxial cable. The method may include using an entry node to submit a query message in selected fields of a Device Attribute Information Element in L2ME protocol. The entry node may require an advanced service. The entry node may not be aware which node of the plurality of nodes is the node selected for supporting the advanced service on the network. The selected fields may include vendor specific fields. The method may further include distributing the query message to the plurality of nodes. In response to the query message, the method may further include determining which of the plurality of nodes can be selected for supporting the advanced service on the network.

  • Publication number: 20110013633
Abstract: An apparatus and methods for transmitting information over a home coax network are provided. A method according to the invention for transmitting information over a home coax network preferably includes adding a multicast transmission mode to a system that previously only had unicast transmission mode and broadcast mode. The method preferably includes broadcasting multicast (“MC”) traffic. The MC traffic may be directed to a predetermined MC group. The MC traffic may be transmitted from an ingress node to a plurality of egress nodes. A portion of the plurality of egress nodes may belong to the MC group. Upon receipt by at least one of the egress nodes of the MC traffic, the method may further include using the at least one egress node to filter the received MC traffic to determine whether the MC traffic is directed to a group for which the egress node is a member.
