  • Patent number: 10616823
Abstract: An access method of a device (10) such as an MTC device to a network (20, 30, 40) which allows the transmission of small data packets without the need to read all the System Information normally required to make an initial network access. The device (10) may notify the network that an access request is occurring from a device that was either specifically allowed to use a stored access configuration or is accessing the cell using modified system information being broadcast by the cell. Such notification may be implicit in the characteristics (choice of preamble, timing, frequency and/or repetition) of the access request. The network, preferably having knowledge of the method being used by the device to access the network, can either reject this access or accept it depending on whether the access was from a stored configuration or read from System Information.

  • Patent number: 10165550
Abstract: A transmission procedure for use in a communication system including a base station and one or more terminals. The base station transmits a signal to a terminal, and provides the terminal with possible characteristics of a further signal for transmission from the terminal to the base station, the possible characteristics including at least one of: one or more locations for transmission of the further signal in the time domain; and one or more locations for the transmission of the further signal in the frequency domain; and wherein transmission of the further signal from the terminal, with one or more characteristics selected by the terminal from the possible characteristics, indicates further information relating to the terminal.

  • Patent number: 9924532
Abstract: The invention provides for association of data streams (and/or logical channels) with individual carriers (cells), and independent buffer status reporting per carrier for terminals with more than one uplink carrier configured. In a “Small Cell” scenario for 3GPP LTE, a terminal may be simultaneously served by a macro cell and one or more small cells. These may operate at different frequencies, have different traffic loading and support different QoS (Quality of Service). The invention allows independent control of traffic on the uplinks to the macro cell and the small cells, which can be used to optimize the user experience in relation to the available resources at any given time/location, and allows particular data to be routed via particular cells.

  • Patent number: 9913237
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a new way for a UE to autonomously indicate to the network from which transmission points (TPs) it is able to receive certain broadcast signals. As an example, by receiving in a broadcast signal in the form of a synchronization sequence, the physical identity of a particular TP, a UE infers when it should, if it wishes, send on an UL an indication of its ability to receive the broadcast signal from that TP—i.e., an indication of its presence in the coverage of the TP. The network is then able to take suitable action in response to this, such as adjusting network coverage, enabling or disabling other broadcast channels and controlling paging.

  • Publication number: 20170142739
Abstract: A scheduling method for controlling wireless transmission of electrical data signals by an apparatus deployed within a predefined area, the method comprising controlling transmission of the data signal according to a preset policy such that, while a human belonging to a specific predetermined category is present within the predefined area, transmission of the data signal is suspended unless urgent. Human exposure to EMF emitted by the apparatus can thereby be reduced. One example implementation minimizes human exposure to EMF emission from the operation of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices in smart buildings, by reducing radio transmission of the M2M devices upon detection of a human nearby. A location-based scheduling policy can also be set for parts of the building. The scheduling policy can further be made to prioritize the EMF reduction for certain people, subject to select criteria, such as health condition, past EMF exposure, or aggregated EMF dosage.

  • Publication number: 20170118686
Abstract: A User Equipment (10) in a wireless communication network reports measurements or selects cells based on the EMF exposure to one or more persons in those cells, estimated to result on the uplink (UL) and/or downlink (DL) due to the UE's use of those cells. The network sends indications to the UE, in order to allow the UE to understand the EMF impact generated when the UE is connected to certain cells. For the downlink, these indications may include an EMF impact indicator or a UL beamforming reception capability indicator. For application to LTE, a new event triggered UE measurement reporting criterion is proposed to allow the UE to report measurements based on a new EMF related metric and to trigger measurement reports with regards to the EMF impact. The new EMF-based measurement reports allow the cell selection/reselection process to take into account minimization or optimization of the EMF impact on the environment.

  • Publication number: 20170041837
Abstract: In a wireless communication system providing a plurality of cells (Cell A, Cell B), the cells broadcast indications related to performance. At least one of the cells (Cell A) is a serving cell for a secondary station (10), and at least one other cell (Cell B) is not a serving cell. The secondary station (10) computes performance metrics for detected ones of the cells. Based on the values of the performance metrics, the secondary station (10) reports measurement/metrics for one or more cells to a primary station (20) providing a serving cell for the secondary station (10). In this way the primary station (20) can know the amount of available resources in each cell suitable for handover, and can make a better handover choice for the primary station (10).

  • Publication number: 20160183299
Abstract: A contention-free activation/deactivation mechanism in PRACH, which allows dynamic allocation of the contention-free and contention-based preambles. This allows contention-free preambles which have been allocated to a UE to be revoked once contention-free operation is no longer needed, or cannot be supported due to a shortage of preambles. In one embodiment, a terminal is configured (S12) with a contention-free preamble by specific signalling, and thereafter monitors periodic broadcasts (S14) indicating the set of contention-free preambles; if the configured preamble is within the set (S16, “Y”), the preamble is activated for contention-free operation (S18); otherwise (S16, “N”), the preamble is deactivated and the terminal should follow the contention-based procedure (S20).

  • Publication number: 20160182203
Abstract: In a LTE-based wireless communication system, a Demodulation Reference Symbol (DMRS) pattern is placed in Resource Element (RE) locations, reserved for Common Reference Symbol (CRS) ports. Various possibilities exist in the placement of DMRS in the CRS potential locations, depending on the number of CRS ports required, the number of REs required for DMRS in each cell, and the number of cells for which those DMRSs need to be orthogonal to reduce interference. The new DMRS pattern is orthogonal to the legacy DMRS patterns. This new pattern will reuse the CRS locations which may be reserved for CRS but not configured as CRSs in the Small cell environment. The new DMRS patterns will take up fewer REs in an LTE Resource Block (RB) than the current DMRS design and allows different REs to be used in neighbouring cells, using the same cell dependent frequency shifts as for CRS.
