An apparatus for testing for pathogens can include a dispenser for dispensing a pathogen indicating substance, the pathogen indicating substance having one characteristic which is altered to another characteristic on contact with a pathogen, a main sensor for detecting a level of pathogen contamination by quantifying the pathogen indicating substance having the pathogen indicating characteristic, and a control unit for generating a signal indicative of the level of pathogen contamination detected by the sensor.
