The television receiver includes a display module for displaying a video signal; an illuminance sensor for detecting an ambient illuminance, the detected ambient illuminance corresponding to one of a plurality of primary display grades for controlling at least one display characteristic of the display module; a system controller for determining, based on the detected ambient illuminance, the primary display grade corresponding to the detected ambient illuminance and for determining a final display grade with respect to the determined primary display grade; and a display characteristic controller for generating at least one display characteristic control value corresponding to the final display grade and for controlling the display module using the generated at least one display characteristic control value.
