  • Patent number: 6816443
Abstract: An optical disc discrimination apparatus and method which discriminate a type of a disc loaded on a DVD-RAM drive accurately and simply. The optical disc discrimination apparatus includes an RF envelope generator which detects an envelope signal from an RF signal read from a disc loaded in an optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus at an off-track state, when only a focusing is accomplished prior to performing a tracking control, an envelope amplitude detector which detects the amplitude of the detected envelope signal, and a disc discriminator which compares the amplitude of the detected envelope signal with predetermined reference level and discriminating whether the disc is a CD, a DVD-ROM, or a DVD-RAM, based on the comparison result. Thus, a type of the disc can be discriminated simply and accurately with a change in the amplitude of the RF signal.

  • Patent number: 5881081
Abstract: An automatic laser power control circuit comprises a laser diode package, a voltage adjusting unit and a polarity adjusting unit. The laser diode package emits laser light according to an applied voltage, and outputs an electric signal of a voltage proportional to the power of the emitted laser light. The voltage adjusting unit adjusts the voltage applied to said laser diode package based on the voltage of the electric signal outputted from said laser diode package. The polarity adjusting unit changes a polarity of the voltage of the electric signal outputted from said laser diode package so that the polarity is the same as that of the voltage applied to said laser diode package, and supplies the voltage having the changed polarity to said voltage adjusting unit. The automatic laser power control circuit provides an advantage that a monitor diode included in the laser diode package can be compatibly used regardless of its ground type.

  • Patent number: 5721718
Abstract: An apparatus and method for discriminating an optical disk includes a spindle motor for rotating the optical disk, an optical pickup device for picking up data recorded the disk, a servo signal processor for processing signals for tracking and focus servo of the optical pickup device by a prescribed control signal, and driving the spindle motor by an output signal of a digital signal processor. The digital signal processor shapes a track zero cross signal picked up from the optical pickup device to a logic waveform. A controller controls the operation of the digital signal processor, stores an optical disk discriminating reference value, generates a gate pulse when the disk is mounted, and compares a counted value of the track zero cross signal with the optical disk discriminating reference value to discriminate the type of disk being used. A counter is provided for counting the track zero cross waveform-shaped signal from the digital signal processor during a uniform velocity interval.

  • Patent number: 5285141
Abstract: A circuit for controlling the velocity of the spindle motor in an electronic device using a disk is disclosed. Particularly, an abnormal rotation preventing circuit is disclosed which monitors the angular velocity of the spindle motor and forcibly controlls it to rotate within a predetermined velocity range when it deviates from the predetermined range. The duty value of a phase difference between two signals among first, second and third phase control signals for driving a three-phase motor is measured. Then, the phase difference is counted and the velocity is sampled. An abnormal rotation control signal is generated when the sampled velocity deviates from the predetermined range. The motor's velocity is then forcibly controlled so as not to deviate from the predetermined range, thereby preventing abnormal rotation of the motor.

  • Patent number: 5216651
Abstract: A pickup driving apparatus, and particularly, a pickup-drive stabilizing apparatus for an optical disc player includes: a detector for detecting an inertia of a pickup relative to a movement speed of the pickup, when an instruction occurs to stop driving a sled motor that transversely shifts the pickup at a high speed for high-speed access; and a comparator that determines whether an inertia speed of the pickup has decelerated to within a range stable for tracking control by comparing the output signal of the detector with a preset reference signal and generates an output signal for starting the tracking control. Therefore, the pickup-drive stabilizing apparatus can stabilize the pickup of the optical disc player after performing high-speed information access on an optical disc.
