  • Patent number: 8542577
Abstract: A digital television (DTV) transmitter and a method of processing data in the DTV transmitter/receiver are disclosed. In the DTV transmitter, a pre-processor pre-processes the enhanced data by coding the enhanced data for forward error correction (FEC) and expanding the FEC-coded data. A packet formatter generates one or more groups of enhanced data packets, each enhanced data packet including the pre-processed enhanced data and known data, wherein the data formatter adds burst time information into each group of enhanced data packets. And, a packet multiplexer generates at least one burst of enhanced data by multiplexing the one or more groups of enhanced data packets with at least one main data packet including the main data, each burst of enhanced data including at least one group of enhanced data packets.

In the DTV transmitter, a pre-processor pre-processes the enhanced data by coding the enhanced data for forward error correction (FEC) and expanding the FEC-coded enhanced data. A data formatter generates enhanced data packets including the pre-processed enhanced data and inserts known data to at least one of the enhanced data packets. A first multiplexer multiplexes the enhanced data packets with main data packets including the main data. And, an RS encoder RS-codes the multiplexed main and enhanced data packets, the RS encoder adding systematic parity data to each main data packet and adding RS parity place holders to each enhanced data packet. Herein, the RS encoder may insert non-systematic RS parity data or null data into the RS parity place holders included in each enhanced data packet.

  • Patent number: 8199801
Abstract: A DTV receiver includes a tuner, a demodulator, a known sequence detector, and a frequency domain equalizer. The tuner initially receives a broadcast signal including valid data in which a known data sequence is periodically repeated. The demodulator demodulates the broadcast signal, and the known sequence detector detects the known data sequence from the demodulated signal. The frequency domain equalizer compensates channel distortion of the demodulated broadcast signal in a frequency domain using the detected known data sequence. In addition, the DTV receiver may further include a time domain equalizer which compensates channel distortion of the time domain signal, or a noise canceller which removes a predicted noise from the time domain signal.

  • Patent number: 7773700
Abstract: Channel Equalization of a digital TV is disclosed. In channel equalization for restoring an original signal from a digital TV reception signal having passed through a channel, the present invention includes estimating an impulse response of the channel from a received signal having passed through the channel using conjugate-gradient algorithm, finding an equalizer coefficient in a frequency domain using the estimated impulse response of the channel, outputting a signal equalized by multiplying a signal resulting from transforming the received signal into the frequency domain by the found equalizer coefficient, and predicting to remove an amplified noise of the equalized signal using the conjugate-gradient algorithm in a time domain. Accordingly, the variation of the channel impulse response according to time can be tracked in the dynamic channel having fast channel variation as well as the static channel, whereby equalizing performance can be enhanced.

  • Patent number: 7466750
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for channel equalization and method thereof, by which a digital signal received via a plurality of antennas is equalized. The present invention includes receiving digital transmission signals using a plurality of antennas, respectively, initializing equalizer coefficients and equalizing the received signals respectively, adding the equalized signals together, predicting a noise amplified in the equalizing step, and generating a final output signal by removing the predicted noise from a value resulting from adding the equalized signals together. Therefore, the present invention performs equalization using a plurality of antennas, thereby enhancing the signal to noise ratio of the final output and facilitating the equalization of the severely distorted channel.
