  • Patent number: 9514156
Abstract: Techniques for topic extraction and opinion mining are described. For example, a machine selects a document that is pertinent to a topic based on searching a plurality of documents. The machine identifies an identifier of a party to a transaction being referenced in the document, and identifies the transaction conducted by the party to the transaction based on the document. The machine determines a rating of the transaction based on the document. The determining of the rating of the transaction includes identifying, from a plurality of polarity words included in the document, a dominant polarity word based on a syntactic distance between the dominant polarity word and the topic in a syntactic tree. The machine determines a sentiment of the document based on the transaction, and the rating of the transaction.

  • Publication number: 20160314195
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system for processing data. During operation, the system obtains a set of topics associated with a set of content items. Next, the system obtains a first set of attributes associated with a first topic in the set of topics and a second set of attributes associated with a second topic in the set of topics. Next, the system calculates a similarity between the first and second sets of attributes and applies a threshold to the similarity to identify the first and second topics as synonymous when the similarity exceeds a threshold. The system then merges the first and second topics under a representative topic. Finally, the system displays the representative topic to a user to improve understanding of the set of content items by the user without requiring the user to manually analyze the set of content items.

  • Publication number: 20160314200
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system for processing data. During operation, the system obtains a set of content items and a set of topics in the set of content items. For each topic in the set of topics, the system automatically extracts a set of attributes that provides a context for the topic from a subset of the content items containing the topic. The system then displays the set of attributes in the context of the topic to improve understanding of the set of content items by the user without requiring the user to manually analyze the set of content items.

  • Publication number: 20160314191
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system for processing data. During operation, the system obtains a set of clauses in a first set of content items comprising unstructured data. Next, the system obtains a set of stop words comprising high-frequency words that occur in a second set of content items. The system then automatically extracts a set of topics from the set of clauses by generating a set of n-grams from the set of clauses and excluding a first n-gram in the set of n-grams from the set of topics when the first n-gram contains a word in the set of stop words in a pre-specified position of the first n-gram. Finally, the system displays the set of topics to a user to improve understanding of the first set of content items by the user without requiring the user to manually analyze the first set of content items.

  • Publication number: 20150317303
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a method, system and apparatus for processing data. During operation, the system obtains a set of content items containing unstructured data. Next, the system obtains a set of part-of-speech (POS) tags for lexical items in the set of content items. The system then uses a computer to match the POS tags to one or more POS tagging patterns to obtain a set of candidate topics for the set of content items and extract a set of topics for the set of content items from the set of candidate topics.

  • Publication number: 20150310530
Abstract: Techniques for providing a member of a social, professional or business networking service with a product purchase recommendation based on products previously purchased by similar members in the social networking service are described. With some embodiments, a general recommendation engine is used to determine a first member is attempting to make a product purchase decision. The recommendation engine identifies members similar to the first member and identifies their product browsing patterns, which resulted in a product purchase, that are similar to the first member's current product browsing pattern. The recommendation engine determines a product recommendation based on the products purchased by the similar members. As the first member's current product browsing pattern changes, the recommendation engine dynamically changes the product recommendation and displays the product recommendation to the first member.

  • Publication number: 20140244361
Abstract: In an example embodiment, a first social media profile is retrieved. Express interests in the first social media profile are extracted, and social media categories corresponding to the express interests are identified. Demographic information is also extracted from the first social media profile. Then, the identified social media categories and demographic information are correlated with ecommerce categories of purchases. Using results from the correlating, a machine learning process is configured, the machine learning process accepting a second social media profile as input and returning a prediction of an ecommerce category as output.

  • Patent number: 8533208
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and systems to determine a niche market of items or services, the first phase of which identifies a gap between demand and supply for a set of items. Session logs may be evaluated to compare transactions involving a specific item to those of a larger group of items. The resultant information identifies areas of high demand, but with low availability. The niche market information may be provided as direct merchandising items for sellers. In one example, the method generates niche market item web pages in specific categories. Additional methods, apparatus, and systems are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20110258202
Abstract: A concept extraction machine accesses textual data of a document. The document comprises text and a title, and the textual data comprises the title and the text of the document. The concept extraction machine identifies a portion of the text as a text token. The concept extraction machine identifies the text token based on the portion of the text appearing in the emphasized text and in the title. The concept extraction machine further calculates a relevance value of the text token based on the textual data. The relevance value represents a probability that the text token is relevant to a concept expressed in the document. Based on the relevance value, the concept extraction machine stores the text token as concept metadata of the document. The concept extraction machine indexes the concept metadata and searches the concept metadata to identify the document in response to a search request.
