The use of coatings instead of laminated layers provides for a manufacturing process that is faster, has fewer steps, and is more cost effective. Coatings can be tailored to provide excellent adhesion, without the problems of delamination seen in prior art laminated backsheets. The coating for the outer side of the substrate can also be tailored to be softened during module lamination. A patterned blanket or other patterned or textured surface can be pressed against the outer side coating layer during lamination. The pattern or texture is thus transferred to the outer side of the backsheet, which will cause light passing through the backsheet to be diffused.
