  • Patent number: 8798627
Abstract: A system and method are provided for supporting a multi-mode portable user terminal (UT) hard handoff procedure for a call from a wireless local area network (WLAN) to a cellular telephone network. The method includes: establishing a link between a UT and a serving WLAN; establishing a call via the established WLAN link; monitoring the WLAN link signal strength; simultaneously monitoring a serving cellular network; initiating a hard handoff to the cellular network, responsive to the monitored WLAN link signal strength falling below a minimum threshold; and, continuing the call via the cellular network. More specifically, the method initiates a call handoff to a Cellular Gateway (CGW) telephone number, responsive to the monitored WLAN link signal strength falling below the minimum threshold. Then, continuing the call via the cellular network includes continuing the call to the first telephone number via the CGW handoff telephone number.

  • Publication number: 20140089532
Abstract: In a Universal Serial Bus (USB) enumeration procedure, a USB Host questions a USB Device for its capabilities and chooses a set of capabilities that best fit. When the USB Device is enumerated, the USB Host may perform several time-consuming and power-consuming operations. However, when the USB Device is tightly or permanently coupled to the USB Host, part of the enumeration procedure may be redundant and can be eliminated. Accordingly, a method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for shortening enumeration of the USB Device tightly coupled to the USB Host are provided. The USB Host sends a request for a Device descriptor to the USB Device, receives a plurality of descriptors in a single transfer from the USB Device, and sets a configuration of the USB Device based on the received plurality of descriptors.

  • Publication number: 20140051432
Abstract: Systems and methods for recognizing and reacting to malicious or performance-degrading behaviors in a mobile device include observing mobile device behaviors in an observer module within a privileged-normal portion of a secure operating environment to identify a suspicious mobile device behavior. The observer module may generate a concise behavior vector based on the observations, and provide the vector to an analyzer module in an unprivileged-secure portion of the secure operating environment. The vector may be analyzed in the unprivileged-secure portion to determine whether the mobile device behavior is benign, suspicious, malicious, or performance-degrading. If the behavior is found to be suspicious, operations of the observer module may be adjusted, such as to perform deeper observations. If the behavior is found to be malicious or performance-degrading behavior the user and/or a client module may be alerted in a secure, tamper-proof manner.

  • Patent number: 7961687
Abstract: A method of effecting handoff of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises measuring at the mobile station a parameter of a signal transmitted by said first base station and a parameter of a signal transmitted by said second base station. When the parameters reach a predetermined condition, a signal quality message is communicated from the mobile station via the first base station to said first mobile switching control station, which responds by generating information for a channel request message for the second mobile switching control station and transmitting the same to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 7499705
Abstract: An apparatus and method of effecting hand-off of a mobile station in a first wireless communication system, which has a first mobile switching node operable with a first base station and a second mobile switching node operable with a second base station, and a second wireless communication system, is claimed. A handoff required message is received at the first mobile switching node, and sent to a second mobile switching node. A message from the second mobile switching node is sent to request allocation for a handoff. In an embodiment, this message is sent to the VLR of the second wireless communication system. In response, a handoff request acknowledge message is received by the second mobile switching node and sent to the first mobile switching node. An initial address message is sent to initiate a circuit connection between the first mobile switching node and the second mobile switching node. Then, the call is received from the first mobile switching node.

  • Patent number: 7251490
Abstract: A GSM1×-to-GSM handoff feature allows a GSM1× subscriber with a dual-mode (GSM1× and GSM modes) handset to seamlessly roam from GSM1× coverage areas to GSM coverage areas. This functionality is facilitated by the GSM1× system design which integrates a CDMA RAN with a standard GSM core network. The GSM1× system is built using standard CDMA as its air interface and an unmodified CDMA RAN with a standard IOS interface to the MSN. The only modifications are done at the MSN and the MS.

  • Publication number: 20070049274
Abstract: A system and a method are provided for supporting a hard handoff procedure for a call from a wireless local area network (WLAN) to a cellular telephone network. The method includes: establishing a link between a user terminal (UT) and a serving WLAN, and a call via the WLAN link; simultaneously monitoring a serving cellular telephone network; forwarding information identifying the UT within the cellular network, to the serving WLAN; in response to losing the link with the serving WLAN, performing a hard handoff to the cellular network; and, continuing the call via the cellular network. Generally, the hard handoff can be performed if the WLAN is able to communicate the UT's identity to the cellular telephone, as the UT's position can be determined by the cellular network. The hard handoff is performed with the UT receiving resource allocations in a common control channel message, such as a Short Message Ser vice (SMS) or paging message.

The method comprises generating at the second cellular communication system an authentication code as the result of applying an algorithm to a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. An authentication code is also generated at the first cellular communication system as the result of applying an algorithm to the private key and the random number. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communication system is then transmitted to a mobile station in a data packet, and, from there, the authentication code is transmitted to the second cellular communication system.
