Abstract: In an ink jet recording apparatus, a recording head is mounted on a carriage which reciprocately moves in a widthwise direction of recording paper. A subtank is mounted on the carriage for supplying ink. A main tank stores ink which is replenished to the subtank. An ink amount detector detects an amount of ink stored in the subtank. A replenishment controller controls replenishment of ink stored in the main tank to the subtank, in accordance with the ink amount detected by the ink amount detector.

Abstract: A wiping unit for wiping a nozzle formation face of a recording head of an ink jet recording apparatus includes a slider reciprocally moving in a direction parallel with the nozzle formation face. A wiper is supported by the slider. One end of the wiper is pressed against the nozzle formation face as a wiping operation when the slider moves in a first direction, while as a rubbing operation when the slider moves in a second direction opposed to the first direction. A supporter rotatably supports the other end of the wiper on the slider. A spring urges the wiper toward the nozzle formation face while keeping an attitude of the wiper directed by a reaction force generated when the wiping operation is executed. A rotation limitter restricts the rotation of the wiper such that the wiper is rigidly supported by the slider when the rubbing operation is executed.

Abstract: A sealing timer (25) for measuring the time in which the recording head (7) is sealed by the capping device (10); an opening timer (26) for measuring the time in which the recording head (7) is opened to the atmosphere; and a cleaning control means having a first cleaning mode in which a predetermined quantity of ink is sucked, a second cleaning mode in which a larger quantity of ink than the quantity of ink sucked in the first cleaning mode is sucked, and a third cleaning mode in which a quantity of ink substantially equal to the quantity of ink sucked in the second cleaning mode is divided into two portions and the two portions may be sucked at two separate times.
