  • Publication number: 20100097725
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a carriage assembly includes a carriage block body, a carriage arm, a coil, a pair of support arms, and a frame body. The carriage block body is rotatably connected to a spindle. The carriage arm extends forward from the front of the carriage block body. The coil is located behind the carriage block body, and defines a linear region extending along a reference straight line extending radially from the center of the spindle. The support arms extend in parallel to the linear region from a back surface of the carriage block body. The frame body is made of a resin material, and fills between the coil and the support arms to couple the coil and the support arms. The support arms extend more outside than the external end of the linear region of the coil in the radial direction.

  • Publication number: 20090237831
Abstract: When impact occurs, a magnetic disk device detects the impact, being transmitted to a head, on an actuator located in a route from an impact source to the head. Upon detection of the impact, the magnetic disk device stops data write operation. Specifically, before the impact is transmitted to the head and errors occur in the write operation, the magnetic disk device detects the impact on the actuator located in the route from the impact source to the head, and stops the write operation.

  • Publication number: 20090128961
Abstract: In a disk apparatus, an actuator includes a magnetic plate member which generates a magnetic attraction force for turning the actuator in the unloading direction by interaction with a stationary magnet. The plate member is superposed on the stationary magnet in the plane direction while keeping a gap with the stationary magnet in the vertical direction. An area of the plate member superposed on the stationary magnet is increased as the actuator turns in the unloading direction and approaches the outer stopper. When the actuator approaches the outer stopper, the stationary magnet gives, to the plate member, a magnetic attraction force of such an intensity that brings the actuator on the outer stopper against a friction force applied to the actuator.

  • Patent number: 7423845
Abstract: A disk drive includes a latch mechanism. A lever and a weight are supported on a first shaft. The lever defines first and second operating spots distanced from the first shaft by first and second distances, respectively. The weight is distanced from the first shaft by a third distance shorter than the first and second distances. A swinging member is supported on a second shaft at a position defined between the first and second operating spots within a space between the lever and the cover of the enclosure. Even if impact acts on the disk drive, the lever is received on the swinging member between the first and second operating spots. The lever is prevented from moving in the axial direction of the first shaft. Contact is reliably prevented between the lever and the cover. Generation of noise can thus be avoided.

  • Patent number: 7379272
Abstract: A lever and a weight are supported on a first shaft for swinging movement in a latch mechanism. The weight gets closer to a head actuator member based on swinging movement in a first direction. A restriction member restricts the swinging movement of the weight in a second direction opposite to the first direction. A swinging member is contacted with the lever swinging around the first shaft so that the swinging member gets into a predetermined path of the head actuator member through the swinging movement around the second shaft. The disk drive always allows the weight, the lever and the swinging member to start swinging from corresponding inoperative positions, even if the disk drive suffers from a sequential driving force in opposite directions due to impact. A head slider at the tip end of the head actuator member is reliably prevented from colliding against the disk.

  • Patent number: 7295405
Abstract: A guiding passage is formed on a ramp member. The guiding passage defines an inclined surface angled towards plane including the surface of a recording disk at a position toward an inoperative position. A restriction member is allowed to restrict the movement of the load tab on the inclined surface when the load tab moves from the inoperative position toward the recording disk. If an impact acts on a recording disk drive when the recording disk stands still, the restriction member serves to restrict the movement of the load tab on the inclined surface. The elasticity of a head suspension enables the load tab to move down the inclined surface. The downward movement of the load tab causes a reduction in deformation of the head suspension. The head suspension thus receives a smaller load.

  • Patent number: 7268972
Abstract: A recording medium drive such as a hard disk drive includes a ramp member. The ramp member receives the tip end of a head actuator. A head slider is thus kept at a position spaced from the recording medium even when the recording medium stands still. A rectifier plate is formed on the ramp member and opposed to the surface of the recording medium at a distance. The rectifier plate serves to sufficiently suppress turbulence of airflow generated along the surface of the rotating recording medium. The suppression of the turbulence in this manner leads to prevention of oscillation of the head slider. The head slider can thus be positioned right at a target point at a higher accuracy. The recording medium drive of the type is capable of greatly contributing to a higher recording density.

Abstract: A guiding passage is formed on a ramp member. The guiding passage defines an inclined surface getting closer to a reference plane including the surface of a recording disk at a position closer to an inoperative position of a lad tab. A restriction member is allowed to restrict the movement of the load tab on the inclined surface when the load tab moves from the inoperative position toward the recording disk. If an impact acts on a recording disk drive in case when the recording disk stands still, the restriction member serves to restrict the movement of the load tab on the inclined surface.
