Patent number: 5709447Abstract: The object of the present invention is to obtain high luminance with low power consumption. Convexes are formed on one side face of a light-guiding plate on a light source side of the light-guiding plate. The convexes are formed at minute pitches in parallel with the longitudinal direction of the one side face. An isosceles right triangle is selected as the sectional shape of the convexes. Light having entered from the one side face is diffused and reflected by a diffuse reflection layer, and light reflected by a reflection plate is emitting from a light-outgoing surface. The light having entered from the one side face is also directly emitted from the light-outgoing surface. The emitted light is diffused by a diffusion plate to irradiate, for example, the side opposite to the display side of a liquid crystal display panel in which the lighting device of the invention is to be incorporated.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Akira Murakami, Yoshihiro Shirai

Patent number: 5508134Abstract: An object of the invention is to economically and easily form light-shielding means with high accuracy. An ITO film, which is used as transparent electrodes, and a resist layer are formed in this order on a surface of a light-transmitting substrate defining an X-Y plane. Thereafter, the resist layer is exposed, using a mask having a pattern corresponding to the transparent electrodes and developed. The bared ITO film is etched in a Z-direction to form the transparent electrodes. Then the light-shielding means is formed, by the use of an electrodeposition method, in a direction parallel to the insulating substrate, starting from a side surface of the transparent electrode not covered by the resist layer. After the completion of forming the light-shielding means, the resist layer on the transparent electrodes is removed. Thus, the steps of manufacturing the light shielding means are simplified.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Yoshihiro Shirai

Patent number: 4729638Abstract: A liquid crystal-type nonglare mirror suitable for room mirrors or for vehicles, which effectively prevents the formation of interference fringes under light sources, such as sodium lamps, halogen lamps and the like. The mirror is composed of a transparent electrode base, a liquid crystal and a reflective electrode base, in which the liquid crystal is placed between the above electrode bases. The technical effects may be provided by the limitation that rubbing directions of both electrodes are nonparallel and that the twist angle of the liquid crystal is about 360.degree.. The technical effects may also be obtained from the insertion of a silicon nitride layer in the construction of the mirror.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1985Date of Patent: March 8, 1988Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Yoshihiro Shirai
