  • Patent number: 6096235
Abstract: An electrorheological fluid composition comprises dielectric particles as a disperse-phase and an electrically insulating oil as a dispersion medium, wherein the dielectric particle has a polymer portion and an electrically conductive carbon black portion and the polymer portion is grafted on the carbon black portion. The electrorheological fluid composition shows a large change in viscosity and the small current properties under an applied electric field, and excellent fluidity and dispersion stability in an absence of an applied electric field.

  • Patent number: 6040101
Abstract: A carrier particle which includes a core and a coating layer formed on the surface of the core. The coating layer is made of a coating material including: an organic compound (A) having a functional group other than an Si(OR.sup.1) group, where R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or an acyl group; a compound (B) and/or a hydrolytic condensation product thereof, having a functional group having reactivity with the functional group of the organic compound (A), and an Si(OR.sup.1) group; an organometallic compound (C) and/or a hydrolytic condensation product thereof; and a solvent (D). The carrier particles of the present invention, enable toner particles to be sufficiently charged even at high temperature and high humidity, so that an image with no fog can be formed. In addition, the carrier particle has high durability. There is no unnecessary attachment of the toner particles onto the carrier particles, so that the problems of carrier particle contamination and spent toner never arise.

  • Patent number: 5952429
Abstract: A carbon black graft polymer which excels in stability of dispersion in various media, coloring property, and imperviousness to light is obtained by mixing under heating a block- or graft-copolymer having a segment (A) containing a reactive group capable of reacting with a functional group on the surface of carbon black and a segment (B) different in skeletal structure from the segment (A) with carbon black. The carbon black graft polymer, by causing the graft chain thereof to incorporate therein an ethylenically unsaturated double bond and/or a carboxyl group, is enabled to manifest photosensitivity, developability with an alkali, and insulating property and acquire usefulness for a black photocurable resin composition such as, for example, the material for the formation of a black matrix particularly in a color filter.

  • Patent number: 5789506
Abstract: A polymeric monomer (A) having as a main component thereof a (meth)acryl type monomer which is subjected to aqueous suspension polymerization in the presence of a compound (B) which is substantially insoluble in water and sparingly soluble in the polymeric monomer (A). The compound (B) has at least one, preferably two or more, structural units, selected from the group consisting of --SH, --S--S--, --COOH, --NO.sub.2, and --OH. The use of compound (B), in the suspension polymerization of the (meth)acryl type monomer, represses of the production of by-produced minute particles due to sympathetic emulsion polymerization. The suspension polymerization permits production of (meth)acryl type polymer particles having high heat stability and a small range of particle diameters.
