  • Publication number: 20040037191
Abstract: A pickup device has various controlled elements such as a light source and a sensor which need to be electrically controlled. The controlled elements are connected with an in-pickup control element via internal signal lines and are controlled by control signals supplied from the in-pickup control element. The in-pickup control element is connected with an external microcomputer via a connector and an external signal line and receives a control signal or the like from the microcomputer. With this structure, the controlled elements in the pickup device are basically controlled, not by the external microcomputer, but by the in-pickup control element. Therefore, the signal lines for supplying the control signals to the controlled elements can be short signal lines only in the pickup.

  • Publication number: 20040037195
Abstract: A tilt detecting device detects and corrects a disc tilt without a dedicated tilt sensor. There is a correlation between an amplitude level of a prepit detection signal and a disc tilt quantity on a disc on which prepits are formed in advance. Namely, the amplitude level of the prepit signal becomes maximum when the disc tilt quantity is zero. Therefore, by controlling a tilt correction quantity such that the amplitude level of the prepit detection signal becomes maximum, the tilt correction can be executed without utilizing a dedicated tilt sensor and the like.

  • Publication number: 20040037198
Abstract: In a pickup device used for a drive apparatus of an optical disc, a storage element is provided. The storage element stores individual characteristic information associated with the pickup device. For example, the storage element stores the individual characteristic information associated with the level of the recording light waveform which is output from the LD provided in the pickup device. In recording information, the microcomputer in the drive apparatus obtains the individual characteristic information from the storage element in the pickup device and executes information recording by using an optimum write strategy determined in consideration of the individual characteristic information. Accordingly, the difference in characteristics of pickup devices is removed, and improvement and stabilization of the recording characteristic can be realized.

  • Publication number: 20040027938
Abstract: A spherical aberration correcting apparatus is incorporated in an information recording system and gives the system a function of correcting spherical aberration in a real-time and effective manner under a recording operation of pieces of information. The spherical aberration correcting apparatus comprises a recording unit, reflected-light level detecting unit, correction amount deciding unit, and spherical aberration correcting unit. The recording unit records a piece of information through radiation of an optical beam onto an optical disk. The detecting unit detects a level of light formed of the optical beam reflected from the optical disk under a recording operation for the information, while the deciding unit decides a correction amount for spherical aberration on the basis of the level of the reflected-light. The correcting unit corrects the spherical aberration by using the correction amount.

  • Publication number: 20040017743
Abstract: In a spherical aberration correcting apparatus, a test recording unit is configured to perform a test recording on an optical disk. A characteristic obtaining unit is configured to obtain a characteristic corresponding to a parameter by the test recording. The parameter is correlated with a spherical aberration. • Publication number: 20030235128
Abstract: The information recording and reproducing apparatus drives the light source based on the recording data to irradiate the laser pulses on the storage medium and forms the recording marks. The level of the laser pulse is varied between the write power level necessary to form the recording marks and the bias level during the mark periods. Since the bias level is set to be lower than the read power level necessary to reproduce recording marks, the quantity of the laser light irradiated onto the storage medium during the recording may be reduced, and the adverse effect due to the heat accumulation or the heat distribution can be diminished. As a result, the recording marks of appropriate shape can be formed on the storage medium, and the information recording accuracy can be improved.

  • Publication number: 20030048724
Abstract: In the information recording apparatus, by driving the light source by the pulse signal corresponding to the recording signal, the laser pulse corresponding to the recording signal is irradiated onto the recording medium. The recording signal has the mark period to form the recording mark, and the space period in which the recording mark is not formed. In the mark period, the output level of the laser pulse changes between the normal level and the writing level, thereby, the recording mark is formed on the recording medium. On the one hand, over a predetermined period in the space period, the output level of the laser pulse is changed to the low level lower than the normal level. Thereby, the heat accumulation onto the recording medium, due to the transient response of the laser pulse in the mark period, is reduced, and in the mark period after that, the correct recording mark can be formed.

  • Publication number: 20020051417
Abstract: A rewritable type optical disc includes recording tracks formed with break portions; and recording marks corresponding to predetermined data and formed on the recording tracks. The recording marks are formed over the break portions on the recording tracks. If the predetermined data, such as control data, recorded as the recording mark is illegally altered, the position of the recording marks are changed and some break portions are not covered by the recording marks. Since the return light level of the break portion, which is not covered by the recording mark, is different from the return light level of the break portion covered by the recording mark, such illegal alteration of the predetermined data such as the control data may be detected.

  • Patent number: 6324380
Abstract: The present invention seeks to provide a dual mode mobile satellite communication unit, which requires low communication cost and very little battery power, does not require always carrying a large unit frame and does not always provide great weight burden on the user. A terrestrial communication portable unit is detachably mounted in the mobile satellite communication unit. The mobile satellite communication unit as base unit does not include a key operating section, a display section and a speech transducer section having a microphone and a loudspeaker, and utilizes those mechanically assembled on the portable unit side for keying and other operations. In an interlocked relation to the removal of the portable unit, the stand-by state of the base unit is turned off. It is thus possible to avoid wasteful battery power consumption on the base unit side.
