  • Patent number: 5329798
Abstract: A leveling device for correcting defective shape of a strip by repeatedly bending the strip under a tensioned condition of the strip, comprising a tension leveler including a stretching roll unit for correcting local elongations of the strip and a C-warp correcting roll unit for correcting the warp in the crosswise direction of the strip, and at least a tension fluctuation suppressing means for suppressing the tension fluctuation transferred from the bridle rolls and preventing the generation of charter mark. The tension fluctuation suppressing means may be composed of a rotary resistant body of at least two deflector rolls or of a pair of pinch rolls arranged one above the other.

  • Patent number: 5239851
Abstract: A five-high rolling mill is disclosed which includes an upper work roll backed by an intermediate roll and a backup roll and a lower work roll backed up by a single backup roll. Control benders are provided on each of the intermediate roll and the upper and lower work rolls. In order to optimize the control of the rolling operation for skinpass rolling and the like, the control benders for the upper work roll and the intermediate backup roll are controlled so as to effect a control of the crown sheet over the entire width of the material being rolled, while the control bender for the lower work roll controls the sheet crown of the rolled material at the lateral side end portions, resulting in a composite control substantially improving the sheet quality and preventing edge wrinkles in the material being rolled. In the disclosure embodiments, the intermediate roll has a larger drum length than a predetermined maximum sheet width of rolled material to be rolled by the work roll.

  • Patent number: 5218848
Abstract: A widthwise bend of an end of a hot-rolled elongate sheet-shaped metal product is corrected while it is hot. The correction comprises simultaneously:(i) holding the edges of the product at at least two positions longitudinally spaced along the product thereby to hold, at least laterally, a portion spaced from the bent end, and(ii) pushing the end portion laterally by means of a laterally moving member. The method may be performed while the product is continuously moving along a path. Both steps (i) and (ii) are performed by rollers rotatable about vertical axes.

  • Patent number: 5121873
Abstract: In a continuous hot rolling system, at least one melt-cut torch is set in a predetermined positional relationship with respect to a trailing end of a preceding hot material and a leading end of an adjacent succeeding hot material. An injected flow of cutting gas from the melt-cut torch is blown against a portion of at least one of the trailing end of the preceding material and the leading end of the succeeding material to melt-cut the portion. The portion extends from an end surface of the one end over a predetermined length. The trailing end of the preceding material and the leading end of the succeeding material are forced against each other and are butt-joined to each other. By doing so, there are produced joining surfaces superior in surface accuracy and high in temperature, to allow joining to be high in accuracy and strength. This joining may be made with respect to slabs before rough rolling, or may be made with respect to bars after rough rolling.

  • Patent number: 5116447
Abstract: A high speed pickling device for causing a thin plate to travel in acid fluid and removing through pickling oxidized scales which are formed on the surfaces of the thin plate, a plurality of weir members which dam wakes of the acid fluid flowing along the surfaces of the thin plate over substantially the entire width of the thin plate are provided in the traveling direction of the thin plate with a predetermined interval and close to the thin plate. The weir members are provided close to the surfaces of the thin plate for damming and stripping off wakes of the acid fluid flowing along the surface of the thin plate at the inlet sides of these weir members, the acid fluid is caused to deflect in the opposite direction away from the thin plate, and fresh acid fluid is sucked onto its surface at the outlet sides of the weir members along with the traveling of the thin plate.

  • Patent number: 5067555
Abstract: In a twin roll continuous casting apparatus comprising a pair of internally cooled rolls rotating in the opposite direction of each other and disposed parallel to each other with their axes held horizontal, a pair of side dams for forming a pool of molten metal having a predetermined height on the circumferential surfaces of the rolls disposed in the direction perpendicular to the roll axes with a space therebetween approximately corresponding to the width of a metal strip to be cast and a pair of longitudinal dams having respective inside walls along the roll axes to form the pool of molten metal together with the side dams and the circumferential surfaces of the rolls, the improvement wherein one of the longitudinal dams is constructed so that it constitutes an intermediate tundish for pouring a substantially horizontal film flow of molten metal near the level of the surface of molten metal in the pool.

  • Patent number: 4741193
Abstract: A roll cooling device for a rolling mill having rolls comprises cooling water guide plates each having a curved surface along a circumferential direction of rolls, the cooling water guide plates being provided close to the rolls, cooling water supply headers for supplying cooling water to cooling water passages defined by the cooling water guide plate and the rolls, water discharge headers for discharging the cooling water, supplied by the water supply headers, from the cooling water passages, support members supporting the cooling water guide plates, and curvature adjusting members for changing curvature of the guide plates in accordance with a diameter of the rolls. A thickness of the guide plate is increased from each edge portion to a central portion of the guide plate in the circumferential direction of the roll. In the case where the roll diameter is largely changed, the clearance between the guide plate and the roll is kept suitably, thereby sufficiently cool the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4613093
Abstract: An apparatus for looping belt-like materials, including first and second looping units for winding a moving belt-like material helically into first and second coils, with a portion of the belt-like material forming the first coil being drawn out into the second coil. A plurality of support rollers annularly arranged along each of the portions of the wound belt-like material forming the first and second coils, and frames are provided with the support rollers, along with a drive for applying a rotary force to the frames. The support rollers are displaceable in a radial direction of an imaginary circle along which the support rollers are arranged in accordance with variations in diameters of the coils so as to bring the support rollers into contact with the portions of the belt-like material which constitute the coils.
