  • Patent number: 4291655
Abstract: Disclosed is an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder head and a piston. A recess is formed on the inner wall of the cylinder head or on the top surface of the piston. The recess defines a combustion chamber when the piston reaches the top dead center. The inner wall of the cylinder head has a flat surface portion. The top surface of the piston has a flat surface portion. A squish area is formed between the flat surface portions of the cylinder head and of the piston. A groove is formed on the inner wall of the cylinder head or on the top surface of the piston so as to extend towards the circumferential direction of the piston. The groove communicates the squish area with the recess. The bottom surface of the groove is smoothly connected to the bottom wall of the recess so as to create a turbulence and a strong swirl motion of the combustible mixture in the recess due to the squish flow pushed out from the squish area when the piston reaches the top dead center.

  • Patent number: 4279630
Abstract: Air cleaning means suitable for use with an internal combustion engine including a fuel vapor adsorbing filter element and a sucked air cleaning filter element arranged independently of and separately from each other. The fuel vapor adsorbing filter element includes a filter material layer containing fibers of active carbon for adsorbing fuel vapors thereon, and a metallic reinforcing member, while a sucked air cleaning filter element includes a filter material layer of the usual type for cleaning the air drawn by suction into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The fuel vapor adsorbing filter element may further include a plurality of reinforcing layers of nonwoven fabric each located on one of opposite sides of the filter material layer.

  • Patent number: 4271801
Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a duplex carburetor, an engine cylinder, a pair of primary and secondary venturis and an intake manifold connected between the cylinder and the carburetor, the manifold having a common chamber located downstream of the venturis and a pair of primary and secondary branch intake passages opening to the cylinder through a pair of intake ports, respectively. There is a valve in the secondary intake passage for controlling the flow of air-fuel mixture therethrough, the valve being opened by a control mechanism including a vacuum servo which receives a vacuum signal from a port opening to the secondary venturi for actuating link means connected to the control valve. The secondary passage is normally blocked and is only opened when the engine rotates at high speed under heavy load.

  • Patent number: 4259096
Abstract: An air cleaner element for an internal combustion engine capable of adsorbing fuel vapor and having an air cleaning filter medium and a fuel vapor adsorption filter medium containing activated carbon fibers, the filter media being partly bonded together with an adhesive into a unitary construction. Both the filter media have a large surface area so that the reduction in size of the air cleaning filter medium and the increase in size of an air cleaner case may not be needed. Furthermore the wear and abrasion of activated carbon fibers due to the vibrations may be avoided.

  • Patent number: 4150541
Abstract: Disclosed is an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus of an internal combustion engine, provided with a three-way catalytic converter and a vacuum-operated flow control valve. The flow control valve has a diaphragm for controlling the amount of secondary air directed into an exhaust manifold of the engine for the effective operation of the three-way catalytic converter. In order to move the diaphragm to increase or decrease the amount of secondary air, a vacuum chamber is formed on one side of the diaphragm. This vacuum chamber is opened to a vacuum port formed in the intake system of the engine for transmitting the vacuum signal from the port to the vacuum chamber. Further, in order to maintain a constant rate of movement of the diaphragm irrespective of the vacuum level at the port, means are provided for transmitting a vacuum signal from the port to another vacuum chamber formed on the other side of the diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 4114569
Abstract: Disclosed is an internal combustion engine comprising a main chamber and an auxiliary chamber which are interconnected with each other via a connecting passage. An annular raised portion is formed on the inner wall of the auxiliary chamber, and the auxiliary chamber is divided into a first auxiliary chamber and a second auxiliary chamber by the annular raised portion so that the second auxiliary chamber has a volume of 20 through 40 percent relative to the volume of the first auxiliary chamber. The connecting passage is tangentially connected to the inner wall of the second auxiliary chamber.
