  • Patent number: 4430174
Abstract: Refinement of impure aluminum is accomplished by a method which comprises placing the impure aluminum in a molten form as an anode on one side of a porous article impregnated with a fused-salt electrolytic bath, disposing a cathode on the other side of the porous article, and passing direct current between the cathode and the anode.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 30, 1982
Date of Patent: February 7, 1984
Assignees: Mitsui Aluminium Co., Ltd., Yoshishige Tsumura
    Inventor: Yoshishige Tsumura
  • Patent number: 4183745
Abstract: Removal of magnesium from a magnesium-containing aluminum alloy is obtained by melting the aluminum alloy, superposing a layer of molten flux containing chlorides or fluorides upon the molten aluminum alloy, and passing an electric current between the molten aluminum and the molten flux for thereby causing magnesium to pass from the aluminum layer into the flux layer and form magnesium chloride or magnesium fluoride.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4159928
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for producing aluminum by the steps of electrolyzing an electrolytic bath composed preponderantly of aluminum chloride while using a tungsten plate or a silicon carbide plate as the anode for thereby educing aluminum on the cathode, splitting the cathodic product of electrolysis from the cathode to produce in the electrolytic cell a muddy substance composed preponderantly of aluminum, collecting the muddy substance, then melting it to produce molten aluminum and cooling the molten aluminum.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 24, 1978
Date of Patent: July 3, 1979
    Assignee: Mitsui Aluminium Co., Ltd.
    Inventor: Yoshishige Tsumura
  • Patent number: 4108741
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for producing aluminum of high purity by the steps of electrolyzing an electrolytic bath composed preponderantly of aluminum chloride or aluminum bromide for thereby educing aluminum on the cathode, causing the cathodic product of electrolysis to precipitate to the bottom of the electrolytic cell, then melting the precipitate to produce molten aluminum, casting the molten aluminum into ingots and cooling the ingots.
