The upper small-clearance portion and the lower small-clearance portion each has a diameter Dx and a vertical length that is equal to or larger than a predetermined length. A pressure equalizing passage is provided which is adapted to guide a suction pressure Ps acting on the upper end of a main valve element to a Ps introduction chamber provided at the lower end of the main valve element so that the suction pressure Ps acts on the lower end of the main valve element. When an electromagnetic actuator or a solenoid portion thereof is not supplied with current i.e., when a valve orifice is fully open, the introduction of a pressure Pc in a crank chamber from Pc inlet/outlet ports into the Ps introduction chamber is stopped, and the suction pressure Ps is introduced into the Ps introduction chamber via the pressure equalizing passage so that the suction pressure Ps acts on the upper and lower ends of the main valve element.
