  • Publication number: 20020105515
Abstract: A form analyzing unit (4) receives 2-D outline data stored in an outline data storing unit (3) via an outline data obtaining unit (2), and judges from the received 2-D outline data whether an outline of a character includes an outline of a hole formed in the character. If so, a top/bottom dividing unit (5) divides an area surrounded by the two outlines into convex polygons. A side generating unit (6) moves each divided structure element in a z-axis direction to generate a side plane of the 3-D character, and generates 3-D data for the character.

  • Publication number: 20020042674
Abstract: When a user indicates a portion of a map to be enlarged or contracted, a surface generating unit generates surfaces by gradually changing a surface from a first shape to a second shape, the first shape corresponding to a position of a map portion previously indicated and the second shape corresponding to a position of the map portion currently indicated. A mapping unit maps the map onto the generated surfaces in sequence, to obtain mapped images. A projecting/displaying unit sequentially projects the mapped images onto a flat virtual screen, and displays the projected images. Thus, the desired portion of the map can be enlarged/contracted, while maintaining connections of roads. Also, the map display can be transformed smoothly, even when the target of enlargement/contraction changes from one map portion to another according to the user's indications. This helps the user comprehend the contents of the map quickly and accurately.

  • Publication number: 20010048377
Abstract: In a map display device, a surface storing unit stores surface information which defines a curved surface having a form that depends on positions of portions of a map which are to be enlarged and/or contracted. A mapping unit maps the map onto the curved surface defined by the surface information. A projecting/displaying unit projects the mapped map onto a flat virtual screen, and displays the projected image. Here, by defining the curved surface so that each part of the curved surface forms an intended angle with a line of sight in the projection, the image is displayed with desired portions enlarged and/or contracted, while maintaining connections of roads. The same effect can also be achieved by projecting the map onto a virtual screen having the form of the curved surface.

  • Patent number: 5949422
Abstract: A shape data compression method for image generation by three-dimensional computer graphics, including a first stage inputting a code number and a quantization precision for encoding a three-dimensional coordinate point sequence and a two-dimensional coordinate point sequence, and reading the coordinate point sequence data. A second stage includes mapping transformed point sequences in a one-dimensional space. A third stage calculates an initial apace division width based on quantization precision, divides the normal space into partial spaces and analyzes distribution of the transformed point sequences therein, decides a division width and calculates distribution of transformed point sequences in each partial space at the division width. A fourth stage obtains a mean value of coordinate values of transformed point sequences distributed in the partial space, and encodes them to produce a code book. A fifth stage generates code sequences for encoding the transformed point sequences according to the code book.
