Abstract: To provide a walking assistance system having a simple configuration with which a walking motion of a user can be appropriately assisted and a method therefor. The walking assistance system according to the present embodiments is a walking assistance system worn on a leg part of a user and includes a damper configured to apply a resisting force in a bending direction of a knee joint of the leg part, a sensor configured to detect a switching timing in a gait cycle of the user, and a control unit configured to switch modes of the damper in accordance with the switching timing so that a first mode and a second mode in which the resisting force is stronger than that in the first mode are repeated alternately.
