  • Patent number: 5547863
Abstract: Soil isolates, identified as strains of Bacillus polymyxa, NRRL B-18475 and NRRL B-18476, produce large quantities of a pure and uniform extracellular polysaccharide fructan (levan), in a sucrose medium. The levan consists entirely of fructose and the residues linked by .beta., 2-6 fructofuranoside linkage.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 14, 1989
Date of Patent: August 20, 1996
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Agriculture
Inventors: Youn W. Han, Margaret A. Clarke
  • Patent number: 4631258
Abstract: An alcohol fermentation process which eliminates the heat gelatinization process is disclosed. Corn is irradiated with about 10.sup.5 to 10.sup.7 rads of gamma radiation to effect sugar yield, susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis of starch, yeast growth, and alcohol production. The irradiated corn is then treated with amylases complex, yeast fermented and distilled into alcohol.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 17, 1983
Date of Patent: December 23, 1986
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
    Inventor: Youn W. Han
  • Patent number: 4304649
Abstract: The solubilization of lignocellulosic fibrous material is accomplished by impregnating the selected lignocellulosic material with one of a group of certain swelling agents, allowing a sufficient amount of time until the desired degree of swelling is achieved, then subjecting the swollen fibers to irradiation from a gamma radiation source.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 25, 1980
Date of Patent: December 8, 1981
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
Inventors: Youn W. Han, Eivind B. Lillehoj, Alex Ciegler
  • Patent number: 4243686
Abstract: The palatability as well as digestibility and protein content of straw is enhanced by treating it with a dilute aqueous solution of hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, ammoniating the acid-treated straw, and fermenting it with a yeast such as Aureobasidium pullulans. The so-treated straw is useful as a feed for ruminants and other animals.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 30, 1979
Date of Patent: January 6, 1981
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
Inventors: Cleanthes Israilides, Youn W. Han, Arthur W. Anderson
  • Patent number: 3937845
Abstract: The digestibility and protein content of straw is enhanced by treating it with dilute acid, ammoniating the acid-treated straw, and fermenting it with a yeast such as Candida utilis. The so-treated straw is useful as a feed for ruminants and other animals.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 8, 1975
Date of Patent: February 10, 1976
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
Inventors: Youn W. Han, Arthur W. Anderson
  • Patent number: 3937849
Abstract: Straw from which the hemicellulose has been removed is not digestible by ruminants. By application of the invention this material is rendered digestible. The process of the invention involves treatment of the hemicellulose-free straw with dioxane containing a small proportion of hydrochloric acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 23, 1975
Date of Patent: February 10, 1976
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
Inventors: Youn W. Han, James W. Pence, Arthur W. Anderson
