    Abstract: A powertrain system including an electric machine rotatably coupled to a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine via a belt is described, wherein the electric machine is disposed to generate torque. A method for controlling the electric machine includes monitoring rotational position of the electric machine, and periodically executing a speed observer to determine a rotational speed of the electric machine based upon the monitored rotational position of the electric machine. An acceleration observer is periodically executed to determine an acceleration rate, wherein the acceleration rate is determined based upon a time-based change in the rotational speed of the electric machine. A virtual inertia term is determined based upon the acceleration rate, and a torque compensation term is determined based upon the virtual inertia term and the acceleration rate. The electric machine is controlled to generate torque based upon the torque compensation term.

The first rectifier receives an antenna voltage through a first power terminal and a second power terminal, rectifies the antenna voltage and provides a first rectified signal to a first node. The shifting rectifier is enabled in response to an enable signal, receives the antenna voltage through the first power terminal and the second power terminal, increases a direct current (DC) level of the antenna voltage, rectifies the increased DC-level antenna voltage and provides a shifted rectified signal to the first node. The field monitor receives the antenna voltage through the first power terminal and the second power terminal, monitors a magnitude of the antenna voltage and generates the enable signal which is activated when the magnitude is smaller than a reference value.

In an exemplary implementation, phase current ripple estimation techniques are utilized for variable frequency switching pulse-width modulation control of the IPMSM. In one implementation, the method includes controlling a three-phase inverter based on an initial switching frequency to generate a three-phase alternating current (AC) voltage for the IPMSM. Transformed voltages are determined in a rotating reference frame based on the three-phase AC voltage in the stationary reference frame. Current ripples are determined in the rotating reference frame based on the transformed voltages. Phase current ripples are determined in the stationary reference frame based on the current ripples in the rotating reference frame. A modified switching frequency for the three-phase inverter is determined based on the initial switching frequency and the phase current ripples.
