  • Publication number: 20230422228
Abstract: Systems and methods provide for assignment of wireless devices to a frequency band for a particular RAT. The method may include determining corresponding bandwidths for each frequency band, calculating a ratio of each bandwidth to a total bandwidth, and ranking each band based on bandwidth. The method may further include assigning wireless devices to the frequency bands based on the rankings of each band and the caps imposed on each band.

  • Patent number: 10904936
Abstract: A wireless communication network serves User Equipment (UE) over a Fifth Generation New Radio (5GNR) access node and a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access node. The LTE access node determines a utilization metric for the LTE access node and selects 5GNR/LTE allocations based on the utilization metric for the LTE access node. The LTE access node receives user data for the UE and transfers a portion of the user data to the 5GNR access node per the 5GNR/LTE allocations. The LTE access node transfers the remainder of the user data to the UE over an LTE link per the 5GNR/LTE allocations. The 5GNR access node receives the portion of the user data and transfers the portion of the user data to the UE over a 5GNR link per the 5GNR/LTE allocations.

  • Patent number: 9525536
Abstract: A base station or other entity in a wireless communication system detects high use of air interface resources and responsively identifies one or more served devices that have reported threshold similar coverage quality for the base station and for an adjacent base station. And the base station applies a limit to allocation of resources for each such identified device.

  • Patent number: 9503942
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for selection of an air interface protocol based on spectral efficiency (SE). When a request for service is received from a wireless communication device on a first air interface, a requested SE of the request will be determined, and a first ratio of the requested SE to an average SE on the first air interface computed. If the first ratio is greater than a threshold, the requested service will be provided on the first air interface. Otherwise, a projected SE of providing the requested service on a second air interface will be determined, and a second ratio of the projected SE to an average SE on the second air interface computed. If the first ratio is greater than the second ratio, the requested service will be provided on the first air interface. Otherwise, the requested service will be provided on the second air interface.

  • Patent number: 9106284
Abstract: Systems, equipment, and methods for driving antenna systems with pairs of overlaid orthogonal antenna elements are provided herein. In one example, a method of operating a remote radio unit that drives an antenna system is provided. The method includes receiving user communications and control data transferred by a baseband unit. If the control data indicates a beamforming mode, then the method includes generating a first plurality of radio frequency (RF) signals directed to at least one of the pairs of overlaid orthogonal antenna elements for target wireless communication devices. If the control data indicates a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) mode, then the method includes generating a second plurality of RF signals for the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the second plurality of RF signals are directed to non-adjacent ones of the pairs of the overlaid orthogonal antenna elements for the target wireless communication devices.

  • Patent number: 8874069
Abstract: A wireless communication device (WCD) may be configured to engage in a wireless data communication session of a given type. The WCD may determine the given type of wireless data communication session, and based on the given type, the WCD may set itself to operate in a current operational state selected from a group consisting of a first and second operational state. While engaged in the wireless data communication session, the WCD may wirelessly receive a voice call setup request from a radio access network (RAN) seeking to set up a voice call to the WCD over an air-interface protocol. In accordance with the current operational state, the WCD may make a decision of whether to accept or reject the voice call request so as to interrupt or not interrupt the wireless data communication session.

  • Patent number: 8818387
Abstract: Disclosed are a method, apparatus, and system for managing connections in a wireless communication network. When a user equipment device (UE) transitions between an idle state and an active state, a radio link is established between a base station and the UE and a core network link is established between the base station and a core network entity. In response to detecting that no data packets are exchanged between the UE and the base station, a timer is initiated. Further, in response to detecting that data packets are being exchanged between the UE and the base station, the timer is reset. The radio link is released in response to the timer reaching a first predetermined value associated with a first inactivity period and the core network link is released in response to the timer reaching a second predetermined value associated with a second inactivity period.
