  • Publication number: 20120129517
Abstract: A mobile telecommunications network includes a core and a radio access network having a radio for wireless communication with mobile terminals registered with the network. The radio access network includes a controller operable to control the use of network resources by the mobile terminals. The controller may include an application programming interface, API, which provides a consistent interface to a multiplicity of applications hosted on the control mean. The controller may be provided at an access node site and/or a gateway site.

  • Publication number: 20110195730
Abstract: In a mobile telecommunications network, a mobile terminal is prevented from communicating at a level that would introduce an unacceptable level of interference at a neighbouring base station by introducing a received signal threshold criteria at its base station that can adapt to the variation in signal levels at its base station and its neighbours.

  • Publication number: 20110111759
Abstract: A GSM or UMTS mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. In addition to the conventional radio access network comprising macro base station, one or more additional access points are provided. The access point is connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. A subscriber may be provided with a designated “home” access point to provide coverage in their premises. Arrangements are described which will tend to reduce the likelihood that reselection to the macro base station while radio coverage is available from the home access point.

  • Publication number: 20110076998
Abstract: A mobile telecommunications network, such as a GSM, UMTS or LTE network, may include, in addition to the conventional radio access network comprising the base stations, one or more additional access points. An access point may be connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point may be configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station. Arrangements are disclosed which allow the access point to dynamically adjust the power output through its Common Pilot Channel relative to one or more users. In other words, the greater the distance a user is from the access point, the greater the output power.

  • Publication number: 20110076985
Abstract: In a telecommunications network including one or more mobile terminals in communicable relation to a mobile network and a data network such that data from the mobile terminals is transmitted towards the data network via the mobile network, a method of directing data from the mobile terminals towards the data network includes: providing an alternative data route towards the data network which bypasses at least a portion of the mobile network; comparing the data from the mobile terminals with selection criteria; and using the result of the comparison to selectively redirecting at least a portion of the data generated by the mobile terminals onto the alternative data route. The alternative data route may be configured to bypass at least a portion of the core component of the mobile network, and data that is redirected is data which is not required to be processed by the bypassed core network component.

  • Publication number: 20100009625
Abstract: A cellular telecommunications network base station repeater for a mobile terminal in a network having a power control function causes, during an active communication session, mobile terminal uplink transmit power to decrease in response to an increase in signal strength of the received uplink signal. The gain of the repeater is increased in response to an increase in the uplink signal received at the repeater above a threshold, and subsequently decreasing the gain until the measured power in the received uplink signal exceeds the threshold. Due to the power control function, increasing the gain causes the transmit power of the mobile terminal, and hence the uplink signal received at the repeater, to decrease. Decreasing the gain causes the transmit power, and hence the received uplink signal, to increase. The threshold not being exceeded is indicative of the communication no longer being active, and the repeater will eventually deactivate.
