  • Patent number: 6735803
Abstract: An electrical dentifrice dispensing toothbrush using a replaceable bristle unit with a permanent drive head and handle is described. The replaceable bristle unit consists of a rotary bristle element and a stationary bristle element that has an opening for the flow of dentifrice material through the drive head. The bristle unit is snap-on latched to the side walls of the drive head. Opposing tabs which also function as pressure sensors on the bristle unit are pressed toward each other to release the bristle unit. A linkage is used to convert the rotation of the drive shaft to a planar oscillation that enables a compact drive head configuration. The dentifrice dispensing is accomplished by using a rotary solenoid for actuating an internal button that applies pumping pressure to the dentifrice material. As a benefit to arthritis suffers, no external squeezing action is involved.

  • Publication number: 20040049123
Abstract: An ovulation-monitoring electrical toothbrush containing a test channel for collecting saliva sample and a miniature camera for capturing the image of the saliva at dried state for analyzing the crystalline patterns for predicting ovulation. A rotary bristle element is attached to the drive head and a notch-like test channel traverses the width of the drive head. A conductivity sensor is mounted on a wall of the test channel for detecting filling and drying of the saliva sample. An algorithm in the microprocessor analyzes the image of the dried saliva and calculates the characteristic line length of line segments of connected saliva dots. A ferning index is also defined and calculated based on the percentage of area coverage of line segments which are exceeding the threshold line length. Trend curves are established based on the daily saliva analysis in a woman's menstrual cycle for predicting days from the ovulation.

  • Patent number: 6623698
Abstract: A biosensor electrical toothbrush having a brush head with a test channel and a renewable biosensor system within the test channel for performing routine saliva tests. The brush head stimulates saliva production and collection in the test channel where measurement signals are produced by sensors. The signals are transmitted for storage and analysis to a microprocessor that provides readable data signals reflective of the presence or quantitative level of a specific component of saliva. The brush handle contains the micro-processor, a display means, a battery, a motor and a reservoir for storing a reagent which is supplied in controlled quantities to the channel during saliva testing. The toothbrush is used to detect fertility periods, pregnancy, labor onset, alcohol concentration, blood glucose concentration and indicators that signal a need for comprehensive HIV testing.

  • Patent number: 6599048
Abstract: A toothbrush that utilizes a replaceable brush head having rubber gum guard on its top surface and a triangular shaped rubber pad on its bottom surface. The rubber gum guard is shorter than the height of the bristles and is positioned on the peripheral edge of a brush head for functioning as a sensor for providing feedback to prevent brushing at excessive pressures and improper angles as well as for massaging the gumlines without the risk of gum damages. The triangular shaped rubber pad is for conforming to and massaging gumlines at the back of teeth. The replaceable brush head having the rubber gum guard and massaging pad features is economically used in conjunction with a permanent handle that dispenses dentifrice material to the top of bristles. The handle has a resilient contractible connector for secure mounting of the replaceable brush head.

  • Patent number: 6434773
Abstract: A dentifrice dispensing electrical toothbrush having two replaceable oscillating brush elements. A motor, batteries and a cartridge that contains dentifrice material are housed in the toothbrush handle. A neck connects the brush head and the handle. A pair of brush elements is mounted on a pair of posts attached to the brush head in a manner that allows their free oscillation. The neck includes a flow channel for dentifrice material that is pumped from the cartridge to the spout opening at the base of one of the brush elements. The brush elements are detachably positioned on the brush head by a snap-on retention cradle and are replaceable by detachment of the retention cradle from the brush head. An oscillating motion is imparted to both brush elements by an oscillating means and a drive shaft that is positioned in the neck and connected to the motor.

  • Patent number: 6330418
Abstract: A device and method of enhancing contact between a photoconductive member of a electrophotographic printing machine and the paper to which an electrostatic latent image is to be transferred uses an array of wiper blade segments mounted on a common shaft. Each segment is attached to the shaft for limited rotational movement on the shaft in opposition to a torsion spring. The torsion spring biases the blade segment towards the paper. Some of the blade segments are operatively associated with a stop mechanism to control the length of the wiper blade array in accordance with the size of the paper being processed. The stop mechanism prevents movement of the blade segment into engagement with the paper by restraining movement of the segment against its torsion spring.

  • Patent number: 6003864
Abstract: A self adjusting jam prevention guide and jam clearance baffle for a printing machine. A moveable guide is attached to a machine subsystem module and is moveable from a first position to a second position. In the first position the guide bridges a gap between the machine subsystem module and a preceding subsystem module. In the second position, the guide is retracted from the gap to allow easy removal of one of the subsystem modules. The moveable guide is preferably self actuated by the use of a biasing device and a ramped section so that the movement of one of the adjacent subsystem modules causes extension and retraction of the guide. A jam clearance aid is further attached to the exit of the machine subsystem module. The clearance aid uses a J-shaped channel to cause a sheet fed into a jammed sheet to buckle and cause both the first jammed sheet and subsequent sheets to be partially ejected from the paper path for easy removal therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5848347
Abstract: A compact dual decurler mechanism that provides a single straight paper path for achieving bidirectional decurling capability. The dual decurler mechanism consists of two pairs of drive roll and pinch shaft and a camming mechanism for controlling their engagements. The first and the second pairs are oriented in opposite directions in a manner that they can selectively form opposite bending nips for decurling incoming sheets of different curl directions. The operation of the dual decurler can be software controlled through the use of an electric indexing clutch such that, depending on system inputs on image area coverage and the type of finishing device being used, the first pair can be adjusted for toward image (TI) bending, the second pair for away image (AI) bending, or both be set at a neutral setting that keeps both nips open when no decurling is needed. The architecture of the single straight paper path of the dual decurler can minimize paper jams and avoids potential damage to sheets.

  • Patent number: 5565971
Abstract: A pivotal, bi-directional decurler that changes sheet bending direction from an away from image to a toward image direction includes a decurler support structure that is mounted for bi-directional movement by a cam mechanism. A belt member is entrained around two support rollers that are supported by the decurler support structure with an unsupported span between the rollers. A pinch roll is adapted to form a nip with the unsupported span of the belt to provide away from image bending of copy sheets when the cam mechanism is rotated into a first position. An elastomer coated rotating shaft positioned downstream of the away from image nip cooperates with a bending baffle when the cam mechanism is rotated into a second position to provide toward image bending of copy sheets.

  • Patent number: 5555083
Abstract: A decurler for reducing cross curl in sheets includes at least one grooved elastomer transport belt and a ribbed pinch shaft. The ribs of the decurler shaft extend into the grooves in the belt to provide one-sided corrugations to a passing sheet and provide distributed localized bending of the copy sheet in the area of the belt grooves. Distributed local bending in the cross direction, as well as, in the wrap in the process direction around the ribbed decurler shaft provide cross curl reduction in the process direction.
