  • Patent number: 4893491
Abstract: A method of forming coil springs by means of a single forming tool comprising the steps of bending a wire feed from a quill by applying a forming surface of the tip of a forming tool to the wire fed, forming a straight portion be separating the forming surface from the wire, changing the direction of the forming surface by rotating the forming tool about the axis of the quill, and again applying the forming surface to the wire to bend it in a different direction. Subsequently, these steps are repeated to form a coil spring having hook portions and a coiled portion of predetermined configuration and size. In accordance with the present invention, since a single tool is used for a variety of tools, a simplified apparatus can be provided.

  • Patent number: 4680950
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for continuously and automatically forming tension springs each provided at the opposite ends with German type hooks. Several forming tools are mounted on rocker arms which swing about respective axes offset from and perpendicular to a central axis of a wire guide. A wire stock is intermittenly fed by feed rolls to a wire guide to pass the wire guide. When the wire stock is positioned in front of the wire guide, it is acted upon by the forming tools to form a first hook a body coil and a second hook. Among the tools, a second forming tool forms hooks and a body coil, and a third forming tool twists and forces a leading end of a body coil toward a position offset from a surface of coil forming on the second forming tool when a one fourth of an initial turn of the body coil is formed. A stationary abutment tool bears against the leading end of the body coil which is displaced by the third forming tool.

  • Patent number: 4296621
Abstract: A wire coil spring forming machine adapted for use with thick wire prevents breakage of a thin wall in a longitudinal groove in a wire guide member or quill when forming a sharp angle bent between a coil body portion and a leading end loop portion, and permits the start of the next spring leading end loop during formation of last spring trailing end loop. A pair of radially movable members move to advanced positions where they grasp the wire portion of an already formed leading end loop just in front of the longitudinal groove. Another radially movable member abuts the loop to bend it at that point without applying the bending force to the longitudinal groove. A body holder means grasps the body after the main tool forms the trailing end loop to permit severing the semifinished spring from the material wire and bending the trailing end loop.
