  • Publication number: 20140181549
Abstract: An AC-to-DC power adapter provides DC power to an information handling system at a first higher DC voltage or a second lower DC voltage based upon a power state of the information handling system. For example, approximately 19 Volts DC power is provided if the information handling system is in an on state or if the information handling system is charging a battery. Approximately 13 Volts DC power is provided if the information handling system is in a reduced power state, such as an ACPI S3 state, with a battery having a substantially full charge.

  • Publication number: 20140117766
Abstract: A electronic device and a power supplying method thereof are provided. The device includes a system unit, an internal power supplying unit and a power controller. The internal power supplying unit is coupled to the system unit, and supplies a system voltage to the system unit. The power controller is coupled to the system unit and the internal power supplying unit, and determines a source of the external voltage according to a voltage value of the external voltage. When the power controller determines that the source of the external voltage is a mobile power supply device, the power controller provides the external voltage to the system unit, and does not charge the internal power supplying unit with the external voltage. The voltage value of the external voltage provided by the mobile power supply device is higher than the voltage value of the system voltage.

  • Patent number: 8645720
Abstract: A power adaptor detection system includes a power adaptor device configured to receive electrical power at a first voltage and to convert the electrical power to a second voltage. The second voltage has a lower value than the first voltage. An identification generating circuit is coupled to the power adaptor device. The identification generating circuit is configured to convert a portion of the electrical power to a substantially constant value electrical current. An identification detection circuit is configured to detect the second voltage. Detecting the second voltage causes the identification circuit to determine the value of a pulse of the electrical current, wherein the value of the electrical current is an identification attribute of the power adaptor device.

  • Patent number: 8140879
Abstract: A power manager of an information handling system selectively commands a first or second source voltage from an AC-to-DC adapter based upon power consumption of the information handling system. A lower direct current voltage is provided during reduced power consumption so that DC-to-DC conversion in a power supply is more efficient. A higher direct current voltage is provided during increased power consumption so that the current required to provide the increased power remains below a threshold current, thus allowing the power system to have components that operate at lower current levels under high power consumption operations yet with increased efficiency during low power consumption operations.
