  • Publication number: 20170328868
Abstract: A method and apparatus for analyzing an object using acoustic emissions. Load data is received for the object. Acoustic waveform data is received for the object from an acoustic sensing system. The acoustic waveform data represents acoustic emissions emanating from the object and is detected using the acoustic sensing system. A plurality of bins is created for the load data. A plurality of frequency distribution functions is generated for the plurality of bins using the acoustic waveform data. A set of learning algorithms is applied to the plurality of frequency distribution functions and the acoustic waveform data to generate an output that allows an operator to more easily and quickly assess a structural integrity of the object.

  • Patent number: 9595092
Abstract: A method for inspecting a composite structure includes acquiring an image of the composite structure. The composite structure includes at least a first ply and a second ply adjacent the first ply. The method also includes transforming the image into a binary image, and determining a first boundary line between the first ply and the second ply. The method further includes characterizing an irregularity in the composite structure based at least partially on the first boundary line.

  • Patent number: 9546865
Abstract: Provided are methods and inspection systems for evaluating height deviations on surfaces of composite structures. The method is based on obtaining multiple linear height profiles of a surface and generating a three-dimensional representation of that surface. This representation is then analyzed to determine various height deviations, such as wrinkles. The three-dimensional surface representation is generated based on position of each linear height profile on the surface. The analysis may be performed along any direction, which may be different than the inspection directions of to the linear height profiles. As such, height information from multiple height profiles is analyzed at the same time. This approach increases the quality of inspection and ensures that different types of height variations can be identified, which may be missed with individual analysis of each linear height profile. Furthermore, this approach allows using high precision linear height detectors, such as laser profilers.

  • Publication number: 20160193806
Abstract: Composite skin-stringer structures which reduce or eliminate the risk of delamination at the skin-stringer interface. This can be accomplished by arranging ply directions (i.e., the angles of the fiber paths of the ply) in a layup in a way such that for the dominant loading, the skin and stringer will each deform in a way that reduces relative opening (fracture Mode I) and/or sliding (fracture Mode II) and/or scissoring (fracture Mode III) at the skin-stringer interface. This is possible when coupling between specific deformations modes is purposefully activated instead of being suppressed. The ply directions in the stringer are adjusted so that the stringer deforms in a controlled fashion to suppress or “close” cracks that are about to form—before the undesirable modes of failure form—as load is applied.

  • Patent number: 9305344
Abstract: The present disclosure is generally directed to of method linear feature detection in a structure by providing a first digital image of the structure, creating a second corresponding digital image of the structure from the first digital image and determining a direction to shift pixels of the second corresponding digital image. A pixel shift value may be input to shift pixels of the second corresponding digital image, and pixels of the second corresponding digital image are shifted by the input pixel shift value in the determined direction. A third corresponding digital image of the structure may be calculated by subtracting the second corresponding digital image of the structure from the first digital image of the structure.

  • Patent number: 8525835
Abstract: A plurality of data from a first coordinate system is transformed into a plurality of metadata, each metadata comprising a location identifier and a value summarizing an amount of data points in the first coordinate system associated with a corresponding location in the second coordinate identified by the location identifier. A metadata is formed only when a non-zero value is assigned to a location.

  • Patent number: 8332165
Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying features for an object. Response signals are received in response to sending signals into an object at locations using a measurement system. A first matrix is formed. Each entry in the first matrix contains an amplitude of a response signal for a location and time at which the response signal was received with respect to when a corresponding signal was sent into the object. The first matrix is decomposed into a second matrix and third matrix such that a product of the second and third matrices represents the first matrix. A number of columns in the second matrix corresponds to a number of features for the object. A number of rows in the third matrix corresponds to a number of sets of weighting factors for the number of features. Information is identified about the features in the object using the second and third matrices.

  • Patent number: 8234279
Abstract: A streaming text data comparator performs real-time text data mining on streaming text data. The comparator receives a streaming text data document and generates a vector representation of the term frequencies relating to an existing document collection. The comparator then transforms the term frequency vector into a projection in a precomputed multidimensional subspace that represents the original document collection. The comparator further calculates a relationship value representing the similarities or differences between the vector representation and the subspace, and compares the relationship value to a predetermined threshold to determine whether the streaming text data document is related to the original document collection. If the streaming text data document is related, the streaming text data comparator intercalates the new document into the document collection. If the new document is not related, the comparator may store or delete the unrelated document.

  • Patent number: 7831597
Abstract: A text summarizer identifies relevant terms in a document, weights the terms and extracts one or more segments to produce a summary or abstract. The various terms in a particular are weighted in relation to an existing document collection. A term weight computer computes term weights for terms in the document, and a threshold comparator compares the term weights to determine if the corresponding terms are relevant to the document collection. Next, a term weight summer adds the term weights for each occurrence of each relevant term in the various segments of the document, and a summation comparator compares the summations to identify a text summarization segment representative of the document. Optionally, relevant terms can be highlighted in the term summarization segment.

  • Patent number: 7584062
Abstract: An ultrasonic stimulus pulse is emitted incident to a laminar structure and recorded as pulse data. Echoes resulting from the stimulus pulse are recorded as echo data. One or more vectors are derived by way of time-shifting the recorded pulse data by respective amounts and a matrix ? is defined including the one or more vectors. An echo vector Y is defined using the recorded echo data. A solution vector X is determined in accordance with: Y=?*X, typically within a predetermined tolerance. B-scan display or other analysis of one or more distinct solution vectors enables user and/or automated identification and measurement of any anomalies within the laminate material.

  • Patent number: 7403932
Abstract: Provided are improved methods, apparatus, and computer program products for text differentiation which involves identifying differences between documents with similar content, not merely similar terms, and generating results. Text differentiation provides the ability to find non-similar, or different, content hidden within documents with similar overall content, but not exactly the same content. Text differentiation may be used to quickly identify key differences between similar documents.
