  • Patent number: 6328026
Abstract: This invention is directed to a method for enhancing the wear resistance of an iron engine cylinder bore comprising laser alloying of the cylinder bore with selected precursors and honing the cylinder bore to a preselected dimension. The present invention is particularly well suited for enhancing the resistance to wear caused by the corrosion caused by automotive ethanol fuel. The present invention is also directed toward an improved automotive engine comprising alloyed cylinder bores with enhanced wear resistance characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5937643
Abstract: A cast iron exhaust manifold having an inside surface covered with a ceramic coating comprising, by weight, about 30% to about 70% unfused silica, about 5% to about 30% magnesia, about 5% to about 20% alumina and about 3% to about 10% sodium oxide. The coating will preferably be built up in multiple layers at least one of which is relatively porous and another is relatively dense resulting from vacuum degassing of the slurry used to deposit the coating.

    Filed: October 6, 1997
Date of Patent: August 17, 1999
    Assignee: General Motors Corporation
    Inventor: Yucong Wang
  • Patent number: 5884600
Abstract: A reciprocating engine having an aluminum engine block, and an aluminum piston wherein the piston's skirt has a hard anodized first layer directly on the aluminum and a composite polymer coating atop the hard anodized layer.

  • Patent number: 5690759
Abstract: Mold for permanent mold casting having a RPVD ceramic coating atop a mold surface which is textured to provide a specific microtopography suitable for eliminating misruns in the casting.

  • Patent number: 5611477
Abstract: A pressure casting machine having a shot sleeve including a highly thermally conductive metal tube having an erosion-resistant and wear-resistant cermet interatomically bonded to the inside surface of the tube may be made by using an explosive compaction and bonding process.

  • Patent number: 5454260
Abstract: Non destructive adhesion testing of coatings to substrates. A supersonic jet of water is impinged against the coating. The impingement intensity of the jet is set at a predetermined "failure intensity" determined by testing of a sample having a minimum acceptable level of adhesion. Parts passing through the supersonic jet unscratched pass the test. Parts whose coatings debond when impacted by the jet fail the test.

  • Patent number: 5429173
Abstract: A solid material is bonded to a metal cast thereagainst by means of a metallurgical diffusion bond. The solid material is coated with a latent exoergic coating which coating reacts exothermically to produce intermetallic phases at the surface of the solid when the metal is cast thereagainst. The heat generated by the intermetallic-phase-formation reaction promotes the diffusion bond.
