  • Patent number: 9828870
Abstract: A system and method for improved system efficiency of an integrated power and control unit (IPCU) of an aircraft is disclosed. The system uses an open-loop cooling system and turbo machine power matching to provide wide operation range without over-sizing. In order to reduce the temperature of the air flow through the cooling heat exchanger, the cooling turbine need to expand further in the same time generating power but the power could be higher than the compressor could absorb so a generator that would convert the power and used in supplying the aircraft would result in more efficient system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 11, 2015
Date of Patent: November 28, 2017
    Assignee: Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation
    Inventor: Yuhang Ho

  • Publication number: 20160221684
Abstract: A method for providing electrical power and cooling for an aircraft includes: connecting a starter generator to an energy accumulator bus; selectively connecting the energy accumulator bus to a first power distribution unit in a first power channel or a second power distribution unit in a second power channel; wherein the starter generator is coupled to a shaft in an integrated power and cooling unit that includes a cooling turbine coupled to the shaft; a compressor coupled to the shaft and including an input for receiving engine bleed air or ambient air and an output for discharging compressed air; a flywheel coupled to the shaft; and a power turbine coupled to the shaft; and using energy stored in the flywheel to rotate the shaft enabling the starter generator to supply electrical power to the energy accumulator bus.

  • Patent number: 7191593
Abstract: The system includes a hydraulic powered actuator. A pump system having first and second hydraulic lines is coupled to the first and second ports, respectively and is capable of providing hydraulic fluid to either the first and second lines. First and second pressure sensors are coupled to the first and second lines, respectively. A third line is coupled between the first and second lines and includes first and second valves mounted in series therein. Preferably, the first and second valves are capable of latching in the open position. A reservoir is coupled to the third line between the first and second valves. A shut off valve is included for cutting off the flow from the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 6948331
Abstract: An environmental control system for an aircraft includes a vapor cycle system for circulating a refrigerant through a fuel cooled condenser, a primary evaporator wherein the expanded refrigerant is used to provide cooling for a cooling medium and a secondary evaporator. An air cycle system is included having a compressor system for providing compressed air, a system to cool the compressed air, a system to expand the cooled and compressed air, a heat exchanger for receiving the expanded air to provide cooling for a cooling medium passed through the secondary evaporator of the vapor cycle system wherein the compressed air is cooled prior to expansion. A fuel to air heat exchanger located between the compressor system and the secondary evaporator of the vapor cycle system for receiving fuel after it is passed through the condenser of the vapor cycle system and cooling the compressed air from the compressor system.
