  • Patent number: 8384654
Abstract: The present invention provides a display device capable of realizing an appropriate screen display luminance in accordance with a video feature quantity and brightness around and sufficiently reducing power consumption. A liquid crystal display apparatus (1) includes: a liquid crystal panel (20) for displaying a video by an input video signal; a backlight unit (17) as a light source for irradiating the liquid crystal panel (20); and a brightness sensor (24) for detecting the brightness around the liquid crystal display apparatus (1). According to the brightness detected by the brightness sensor (24), luminance conversion characteristic defining the light emission luminance of the backlight for the feature quantity (such as APL) of the input video signal is changed.

  • Patent number: 8089449
Abstract: Provided is a liquid crystal display apparatus capable of stopping the brightness control of a back light source on the featuring quantity of an input video signal, in case a multi-plane display was performed. The liquid crystal display apparatus comprises a liquid crystal panel (6) for displaying a picture, a light source for irradiating the liquid crystal panel (6), a backlight unit (7) for controlling the light source, a two-plane control unit (3), and a brightness control unit (4). In accordance with the featuring quantity of the input video signal, the brightness control unit (4) performs the control of the emitting brightness of the back light source, upon the backlight unit (7).

  • Publication number: 20090268105
Abstract: Provided is a liquid crystal display device capable of stopping the emitting luminance control of a backlight source on the APL of an input video signal in accordance with an input mode. The liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal panel (7) for displaying a picture, a backlight source for irradiating the liquid crystal panel (7), and a luminance controlling portion (5) for controlling the light source. The luminance controlling portion (5) performs the emitting luminance control of the backlight source according to the featuring quantity of the input video signal, upon a backlight unit (8). In case an input mode (e.g., a PC input mode or a game input mode) to input a predetermined video signal other than the input mode to input a television video signal is selected, the luminance controlling portion (5) controls the backlight unit (8) so that the emitting luminance of the backlight source may be kept constant irrespective of the featuring quantity of the input video signal.

  • Publication number: 20090174636
Abstract: It is possible to perform an optimal video expression in accordance with a change of a feature quantity of a video signal without lowering the display quality and reduce power consumption. As the video feature quantity, for example, APL is used. When the feature quantity is greater than a first predetermined value p1, as the feature quantity increases, the emission brightness of a light source is made smaller. Moreover, in the region where the feature quantity is smaller than the predetermined value p1, as the feature quantity decreases, the emission brightness of the light source is made smaller. Moreover, when the feature quantity is equal to the predetermined value p1, the emission brightness of the light source is made maximum. Moreover, when the feature quantity is greater than a second predetermined value p2, as the feature quantity increases, the ratio of decrease of the emission brightness of the light source is made greater.
