The method includes selecting a digital pre-distortion (DPD) model to compensate for nonlinearity of the transmitting device at a rated output, obtaining characteristic information related to a relationship between a gain of the transmitting device and a nonlinearity parameter, based on the selected DPD model, and determining a gain corresponding to a minimum value of the nonlinearity parameter as a gain for the rated output, based on the characteristic information.

    Abstract: A data storage device comprises a disk and a recording head. A thermal fly-height control (TFC) heater thermally adjusts a spacing of the recording head from a surface of the disk. A thermal proximity sensor detects a spacing of the recording head from the disk surface and generates a thermal proximity sensor signal indicative of the detected spacing. A height of smear accumulated on the recording head is determined by dithering the TFC heater about a DC power level, measuring a skewness in the thermal proximity sensor signal while the TFC heater is being dithered, and determining the smear height from the measured skewness.

The reference phase may be the phase of a reference signal transmitted from a reference RF chain.

The transparent smear is formed by pretreating the magnetic recording head with the transparent material from the magnetic media. The pretreating occurs without writing any data to the magnetic media. Once the transparent smear is in place, writing may occur. The magnetic recording head can be retreated at a later time should the transparent smear degrade. Furthermore, if an optically absorbing smear develop, it can be removed and a new transparent smear may be formed.
