    Abstract: According to one embodiment of this invention includes a disc drive section which reads compressed video information and management information from a recording medium. The management information contains resolution information obtained when the compressed video information is decoded. Digital-to-analog converters subjects the video information decoded by the decoder sections to digital-to-analog conversion. A management information determining section contains a resolution determining section which determines resolution of the decoded video information with reference to management information. A decode mode setting section sets the decoder sections and digital-to-analog converters into a processing mode suitable for the resolution based on the determination result of the resolution determining section.

    Abstract: An ITV camera picks up an image of an image pickup region including a moving object and a fixed object which serves as a reference to measure a distance. Images are fetched through the ITV camera at a first aperture which discriminates between a background and the fixed object and a second aperture which discriminates between the background and the moving object. The images thus fetched are added together and edges (outlines) of the fixed object and the moving object from the added image. A distance between the fixed object and the moving object is calculated from the extracted edges. The optimal aperture, enlargement ratio and focal lengths are automatically determined in a short period of time in accordance with the image pickup region and an optimal image is provided.

An image changing area is defined within a rectangular region, and is extracted from image signals corresponding to the images captured by the TV camera. From the image changing area, horizontal projective data is obtained. The horizontal projective data is compared with a standard horizontal projective data corresponding to a standard moving object to distinguish the moving object.
