  • Patent number: 6636469
Abstract: A method for reading data from an unbalanced disk in a disk drive is disclosed. The method includes the steps of measuring a degree of unbalance of the disk while starting up a rotation of the disk, determining a suitable rotating speed for error-free reading (e.g., a maximum error-free reading speed) corresponding to the measured degree of unbalance, based on a previously stored relationship between degree of unbalance and suitable rotating speed, and beginning a reading operating while rotating the disk at the determined rotating speed. In accordance with the method, it is possible to suppress an unbalanced disk from vibrating, thereby achieving a stable data reading from the disk.

  • Patent number: 6324140
Abstract: An eccentric disk detection apparatus for an optical disk device is provided. The eccentric disk detection apparatus detects eccentricity, as well as determines whether the eccentricity is high or low, by sensing and analyzing the reverse electromotive force. Upon detection of eccentricity, the eccentric disk detection apparatus can adjust the maximum number of revolutions of the disk in accordance to the sensed reverse electromotive force, thereby compensating for the eccentricity of the disk.

  • Patent number: 6295254
Abstract: A method for performing a seek control operation for a disk device of the type having a pickup for reading/writing data from and to a disk is provided. The method includes the steps of counting mirror signals generated for every revolution of the disk recording medium, where each mirror signal corresponds to one of the tracks radially arranged on the disk recording medium; moving a pickup until the counted number of mirror signals is equal to a predetermined number of tracks required for the pickup to pass to reach a target track. The method further includes the steps of checking respective intervals of successive mirror signals; determining if there is a difference in length between intervals of two successive mirror signals; and executing a correction mode by adding or subtracting a correction value to the counted number of mirror signals if there is a difference in length between intervals of two successive mirror signals.

  • Patent number: 5691968
Abstract: An optical disk unit wherein a disk rotating speed is automatically adjusted for reading optical information from various optical disk types, each optical disk type requiring a different rotating speed. The optical disk unit moves an optical head to a track corresponding to a program start position, then moves the optical head to a second track which is a predetermined distance from the first track. The program time information is then read from the second track and compared with preset values. When the program time information is less than a first preset value, the optical disk unit rotates the disk at a slow speed (for example, such that a linear speed of the optical head is 1.2 m/s relative to the disk). When the program time information is less than the first preset value and greater than a second preset value, the optical disk unit rotates the disk at an intermediate speed (for example, 1.3 m/s).
