    Abstract: In order to avoid generation of black unevenness caused by the water intrusion into a liquid crystal display device, there is to provide a liquid crystal display device including a display area and a terminal portion, in which a TFT substrate with an organic passivation film formed and an opposite substrate are adhered to each other by a seal portion and a liquid crystal is enclosed there, wherein in the seal portion of the TFT substrate, a groove-shaped through-hole is formed in the organic passivation film to surround the display area, a water absorption layer formed of the same material in the same process as that of the organic passivation film is formed within the groove-shaped through-hole, and the water absorption layer is not covered with the inorganic insulating film.

The driver circuit has a light transmission area that is formed inside of the driver circuit, and is higher in light transmittance than an area in which a non-transparent conductive film forming the driver circuit is formed, and a high sealing property area in which the seal material and an insulating film come into direct contact with each other between the light transmission area and an outer edge of the thin film transistor substrate.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal display device has pixels in a TFT substrate, each of the pixels has a TFT. An organic insulting film 108 is formed to cover the TFT. A first electrode 109 and a second electrode 111 are formed above the organic insulting film 108 with an inorganic insulating film 110 placed between the first electrode 109 and the second electrode 111. An alignment film is formed on the first electrode 109 and the second electrode 111. The second electrode 111 connects with the TFT through a contact hole formed in the organic insulating film 108. A cross section of the organic insulating film 108 that includes the contact hole and is parallel to the second direction has a convex section and a concave section 70 at a bank located near the contact hole, the convex section being located closer to the contact hole than the concave section 70.

There is provided a liquid crystal display device including a TFT substrate and a counter substrate bonded together by a seal portion formed along the periphery of the counter substrate, the TFT substrate having a terminal area formed in a portion thereof not opposed to the counter substrate. The TFT substrate has a bank-like organic passivation film formed along the edge of the terminal area. A stepped part is formed on the organic passivation film. The film thickness of the organic passivation film on the edge side of the stepped part is greater than the film thickness inside the stepped part.

    Abstract: Red pixels (R), blue pixels (B) and green pixels (G) are formed in parallel. First columnar spacers 10 and second columnar spacers 20 are formed on a first substrate. The distance between the first substrate and a second substrate in a normal state is determined by the first columnar spacers 10. The diameter of a light blocking film corresponding to each first columnar spacer 10 is greater than the diameter of a light blocking film corresponding to each second columnar spacer 20. The first columnar spacer 10 is not formed at a boundary between a green pixel (G) and a red pixel (R) or a boundary between a green pixel (G) and a blue pixel (B). The second columnar spacer 20 is formed at a boundary between pixels irrespective of the pixel color. Thus, appropriate color balance can be attained with ease without having a drop in the luminance.

A hole is formed at a predetermined pitch on the organic passivation film of the TFT substrate corresponding to the seal part when viewed on a plane. When the hole is viewed on a plane, a shortest distance from the hole to the hole is four micrometers or greater and 12 micrometers or less at a height of h1=0.9×h2 from a bottom face of the hole, where a depth of the hole is defined as h2.
