  • Publication number: 20070026263
Abstract: Metal alloy heatsink films for magnetic recording media are disclosed. The metal alloy heatsink films possess both high thermal conductivity and improved mechanical properties such as relatively high hardness. The metal alloy heatsink films also have controlled microstructures which are compatible with subsequently deposited crystalline magnetic recording layers. The films may comprise single phase CuZr or AgPd alloys having a selected crystal structure and orientation. The combination of high thermal conductivity, good mechanical properties and controlled microstructures makes the metal alloy heatsink films suitable for various applications including heat assisted magnetic recording systems.

  • Patent number: 7128987
Abstract: Multilayer magnetic structures comprising composite layers and spacer layers are disclosed. The composite layers include a discontinuous magnetic phase such as Co, Ni or Fe platelets, and a continuous nonmagnetic phase such as C, AlOx, SiOx, ZrOx, Cu, Ag and Au. The spacer layers may comprise Pt, Pd, Au or the like. The composite layers and spacer layers may be made by sputtering. The multilayer structures are useful as magnetic recording layers of magnetic recording media. In one embodiment, the recording media comprises a perpendicular magnetic recording medium including a substrate, a soft magnetic underlayer, a seed layer and the multilayer structure.

  • Publication number: 20060154110
Abstract: Patterned thin films comprise regions of relatively low thermal conductivity material separated by regions of relatively high thermal conductivity material. The low thermal conductivity regions may be provided in the form of cylinders or cuboids which are arranged in a continuous matrix of the high thermal conductivity material. The thin film may be used as thermal control layers in data recording media such as heat assisted magnetic recording media.

  • Publication number: 20050053795
Abstract: A recording medium comprises a recording layer and a dual layer seed layer. The dual layer seed layer includes a first layer including at least one of Cu, Au, Ag, Al or copper alloys and a second layer formed between the recording layer and first layer. The second layer comprises a metal oxide, such as ITO. A magnetic disc drive storage system and a thin film structure are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20040072036
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium for communication with a transducer moving relative to the recording medium along a line of relative transducer motion. The magnetic recording medium has a substrate with a substrate surface, and a seed layer on the substrate surface. The magnetic recording medium also has a soft magnetic underlayer on the seed layer. The soft magnetic underlayer includes a magnetic material having a magnetic moment larger than 1.7 teslas. The soft magnetic underlayer has a texture that provides a magnetic easy axis that has an easy axis alignment parallel to the line of relative transducer motion. A magnetic storage layer is on the soft magnetic underlayer.
