Patent number: 7347508Abstract: A combined brake system and method, for a two-wheeled motor vehicle, is capable of synchronizing a braking operation of either a front or rear wheel with a braking operation of the other wheel. The brake system enables a rider to perform braking operations in which the rider feels no little or no discomfort. The system includes a pair of hydraulic pressure modulators for supplying hydraulic pressure, generated by an electrically-operated actuator, to front and rear brake calipers, respectively. A controller electrically controls each hydraulic pressure modulator in response to a riding condition for the vehicle and in response to a braking operation applied by the vehicle operator.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2005Date of Patent: March 25, 2008Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masanobu Nakayama, Kazuhiko Tani, Yukimasa Nishimoto, Hideo Takahashi

Patent number: 7234784Abstract: In a braking device of a motorcycle, in which a rear wheel braking mechanism is operated in conjunction with a front wheel braking operation, accurate determination of a reduction in rear wheel load is provided, and additional reduction of the rear-wheel load is prevented. Determination of a reduction in rear-wheel load is based on vehicle speed in the front wheel braking operation, hydraulic pressure of a brake caliper on the front wheel side, and respective slip ratios of the front and rear wheels. When the rear-wheel load is reducing, hydraulic pressure of a brake caliper on the rear wheel side is controlled so as to keep the slip ratio of the rear wheel at or below a set value. A hydraulic modulator supplies/evacuates the hydraulic pressure to/from the brake caliper on the rear wheel side, and the slip ratio of the rear wheel is controlled by electrically controlling the hydraulic modulator.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2005Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kazuhiko Tani, Masanobu Nakayama, Yukimasa Nishimoto

Publication number: 20070075582Abstract: To provide a braking device for a vehicle, which is capable of switching properly between single braking for one of front and rear wheels and combined braking with CBS according to the driving conditions of the vehicle, and of thereby achieving the balance between active vehicle controllability based on a driver's intention and braking performance. Brake systems respectively for the front and rear wheels are provided so that brake caliper assemblies respectively for the front and rear wheels can be operated independently of each other with brake operating sections exclusively for the brake caliper assemblies for the front and rear wheels, respectively. The brake system for the front wheel is provided with a hydraulic pressure modulator capable of feeding a braking force to the brake caliper assembly for the front wheel. When a rear wheel slip ratio exceeds a threshold value under rear brake operation, a controller activates the hydraulic pressure modulator for the front wheel to start braking the front wheel.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 28, 2006Publication date: April 5, 2007Inventors: Masanobu Nakayama, Yukimasa Nishimoto

Patent number: 7188911Abstract: A braking device for a motorcycle, in which front wheel braking means is operated in conjunction with a braking operation on a rear wheel, eliminates a rapid change in front/rear braking force distribution at the time of a rear wheel braking operation so as to consistently allow a rider to feel a smooth braking operation. Braking force distribution characteristics on the rear and front wheels are previously set for each vehicle speed. When the braking operation on the rear wheel is performed, a brake caliper on the front wheel is controlled so as to maintain braking force distribution characteristics corresponding to a vehicle speed when the operation is started.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2005Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kazuhiko Tani, Masanobu Nakayama, Yukimasa Nishimoto

Patent number: 5372408Abstract: A brake apparatus for motorcycles with a master cylinder connected directly to a front wheel brake cylinder and connected through pressure control valves to a rear wheel brake cylinder. An adjustment varies the ratios of application of pressures to front and rear brakes through variation in valve spring settings to accommodate variations in load. A sensing system may be employed to determine application of braking force to the front wheel. This system may take the form of a mechanical servo mounting the front brake calipers, a direct pressure application in the master cylinder or a transducer measuring brake pressure to the front wheel. When braking to the front wheel is sensed above a selected threshold, the ratio of brake pressure of the front to rear wheels is reduced. A orifice restriction associated with the pressure control valves reduces sensitivity to variation in braking due to valve action.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1993Date of Patent: December 13, 1994Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Tetsuo Tsuchida, Kanau Iwashita, Yukimasa Nishimoto, Yoshiaki Sawano

Patent number: 5363943Abstract: To prevent local abrasion of a lining of a brake pad when one of a plurality of pistons for pressing the lining against a disk plate is rendered operative, a lining 16b mounted on a back plate 16a of a brake pad 16 is separated into two, and a recessed portion 26 or a gap is formed between the two linings 16b in a corresponding relationship to the position of a central one 21 of three pistons 20, 21 and 22. When the central piston 21 is rendered operative, the operating force of the piston 21 is dispersed to the left and right by the recessed portion 26 or the gap to act upon a disk plate 18, and consequently, local abrasion of the lining 16b is prevented.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1992Date of Patent: November 15, 1994Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kanau Iwashita, Yukimasa Nishimoto, Yoshiaki Sawano, Tetsuo Tsuchida

Patent number: 4703839Abstract: A disk brake system employing a caliper support bracket pivotally mounted about the axis of a first disk which is coupled with a hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic cylinder in turn drives a second caliper assembly on a second disk. The hydraulic cylinder driven by the caliper support bracket is aligned with the plane of the disk. A bell crank may be employed in alignment with the disk to couple the caliper support bracket and the hydraulic cylinder together.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1986Date of Patent: November 3, 1987Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Nakano Yasuo, Kazuaki Fukami, Yukimasa Nishimoto
