    Abstract: A rotary machine includes a stationary housing having a rotor chamber and a rotor rotatably mounted in the rotor chamber, the inner peripheral surface of the rotor chamber having a central axis which is eccentrically disposed relative to the axis of rotation of the rotor. The housing has generally planar inner end walls having a cylindrical opening through which the rotor shaft extends. A plurality of vanes are slidably mounted in vane slots in the rotor and operable to define variable volume chambers as the rotor rotates and the vanes move generally radially in and out of the vane slots. Back pressure regulating grooves are disposed in the end walls of the housing, the grooves having a central axis coincident with the axis of rotation of the rotor, the grooves being juxtaposed to the vane slots and communicating with the vane slots for regulating the internal back pressure on the vanes in the vane slots.

    Abstract: A rotary machine includes a housing having a rotor chamber and a rotor rotatably mounted in the rotor chamber. The rotor has longitudinal ends and a plurality of generally radially disposed vane slots extending between the longitudinal ends. A plurality of vanes are slidably mounted in the vane slots and operable to define variable volume chambers as the rotor rotates and the vanes move generally radially in and out of the vane slots. Rings are rotatably mounted on the housing and limiting devices are provided between the rings and the vanes and are operable to limit the extent of outward radial movement of the vanes from their respective vane slots during rotation of the rotor to preclude sliding contact between the vanes and the inner peripheral surface of the housing. Biasing springs on the housing are engageable with the rings and bias the rings in an axial direction toward the longitudinal ends of the rotor to thereby suppress axial oscillation of the rings and stabilize the rotation of the rings.

    Abstract: A rotary machine for handling a fluid includes a housing having a rotor chamber and a rotor rotatably mounted in the chamber. The rotor has a plurality of generally radially disposed vane slots, and a plurality of vanes are slidably mounted in the vane slots and operable to define variable volume chambers for the fluid as the rotor rotates and the vanes move generally radially in and out of the vane slots. The vanes have projections projecting from the longitudinal ends thereof, and the housing has annular rings having inner cylindrical surfaces disposed to be engaged by projections. Grooves on the outer surface of the rings are operable to produce a layer of fluid between such outer surface and the housing to thereby minimize the frictional rotational resistance of the rings on the housing, the rings thereby being rotated in approximately synchronization with the rotor.

Molten metal is placed into the mold such that it infiltrates the porous end portions while forming the central portion. Solidification of the metal forms fiber-reinforced metal-matrix composite end portions integral with the central portion.

The rotary sleeve (30) is pushed back to the center by a buffering action of air in the buffer chamber whenever it is put aside toward the center housing (22), thereby being prevented against a direct contact with the inner periphery of the center housing (22).
