  • Patent number: 5715788
Abstract: An integrated fuel injector and ignitor assembly is provided which includes an injector body, a fuel control valve and an ignition device. The components are packaged to create a compact assembly for positioning within an injector mounting bore and particularly in a mounting bore of an existing diesel engine. The assembly may include a fuel reservoir for accumulating fuel for injection so as to stabilize the injection pressure. Also, the ignition device may include an ignition coil mounted on the injector body and a replaceable ignitor electrode cartridge mounted on an opposite end of the injector body to permit simple, cost effective replacement of the electrodes/spark plug.

  • Patent number: 5713335
Abstract: In accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention a timing adjustment device includes a cam follower that is engaged between an overhead cam and an injector rocker arm, and is mounted on a rotatable eccentric shaft. The geometry of the eccentric shaft and cam follower is designed so that, as timing is varied by rotation of the eccentric shaft, no change is produced in the vertical height of the rocker arm when the cam shaft is on the outer base circle and the injector is bottomed, in order to assure that the "mechanical crush" of the PT type injector is constant despite changes in timing. In a first application of the timing arrangement, it is used together with a simple injector, which does not utilize a multi-plunger arrangement to form a hydraulic link, to achieve lower parasitic losses.

  • Patent number: 5697345
Abstract: A clamping load distributor disposed and connecting between a fuel injector body and a clamping device. The clamping load distributor functions as an intermediary to transmit the static clamping load from the clamping device to the fuel injector body. The clamping load distributor includes a cylindrically shaped main body having a bore extending therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface. The upper surface of the main body being adapted for receiving the clamping load from a clamping device. The lower surface having at least one portion normally contacting the deck of the fuel injector body. The clamping device engages the upper surface of the clamping load distributor at a position axially aligned with a portion of the lower surface that normally does not contact the fuel injector body. The geometric relationship of the clamping load distributor functions to more uniformly distribute the static clamping load across the fuel injector body.

  • Patent number: 5676114
Abstract: The improved needle controlled common rail fuel system of the present invention includes split common rails serving respective sets of injectors and a respective high pressure pump associated with each rail. The high pressure pumps reciprocate to cyclically create gradual periods of increasing pressure in the common rail during the advancement stroke of the plunger followed by respective periods of decreasing pressure during the plunger's retraction stroke. The fuel injectors include an injection control valve and a needle control device for creating an injection event during a pumping event by controlling the fuel flow to drain so as to control the fuel pressure forces acting on an injector needle valve element. A flow limiting device is provided to limit the fuel flow from a control volume to drain during an injection event thus reducing parasitic losses while maintaining quick valve closing. The system also includes an improved fuel injector design including an intensification plunger assembly.

  • Patent number: 5611317
Abstract: A cam operated open nozzle fuel injector is provided comprising a reciprocating plunger assembly including an outer plunger, an inner plunger and a variable volume timing chamber located between the plungers. A hold down force generating means includes a cam having a hold down cam or ramp portion for maintaining the inner plunger in an innermost position against the inner end of the injector body with a sufficient hold down force during each hold down period throughout injector operation independently of injector train wear. The hold down cam portion operates to move the outer plunger inwardly towards the inner plunger throughout a substantial portion of the hold down period. The hold down cam portion functions to compensate for fuel drainage from the timing chamber so as to maintain a predetermined pressure in the timing chamber corresponding to a desired hold down force.

  • Patent number: 5534161
Abstract: An automatic water drain and priming pump for a fuel system in which a reversible pump is operable in a first direction to pump separated water out of a fuel filter and into a water drain, and further operable in a second (opposite) direction to pump fuel into the fuel filter in order to prime the fuel pump. Operation of the pump in the first direction to drain water from the fuel filter is initiated by water-in-fuel sensors within the fuel filter. Operation of the pump in the second direction to prime the fuel pump is initiated by manual activation of a switch during servicing of the fuel filter.

  • Patent number: 5441027
Abstract: A metering system is provided which controls the amount of fuel supplied to the combustion chambers of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprising a fuel pump for supplying fuel at low pressure to a first and a second group of unit fuel injectors, a first solenoid-operated fuel control valve controlling the flow of fuel to the first set of injectors and a second solenoid-operated fuel control valve controlling the flow of fuel to the second set of injectors. The system may also include first and second solenoid-operated timing fluid control valves associated with the first and the second group of injectors, respectively. The injectors are capable of being in the fuel receiving mode, establishing a metering period, and the timing receiving mode, establishing a timing period, at the same time to increase the amount of time available for metering both timing fluid and fuel.

  • Patent number: 5329908
Abstract: In accordance with preferred embodiments, a fuel injector has a gas accumulator of a volume that is at least ten times the maximum amount of fuel which would have to be injectable thereby, and a solenoid operated poppet valve with an end face that opens into the combustion cylinder and is shaped to deflect a portion of the fuel injected into direct contact with the ignition plug. In a first embodiment, using a variable fuel supply, an electronic control unit (ECU) controls the injection timing to inject the compressed gas into the cylinders as each's piston nears its top dead center (TDC) position to obtain diesel engine-like efficiencies (.eta.=45%) so long as the compressed gas supply pressure is sufficiently high (at least approximately 2,000 psi), and when the compressed gas supply pressure becomes too low for high efficiency operation (i.e.

  • Patent number: 5301876
Abstract: A fuel injector which uses interchangeable subassemblies to allow the fuel injector to be converted from open to closed nozzle options without affecting engine installation, and without altering the timing or metering principles. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fuel injector is comprised of two subassemblies, a first subassembly of which is a timing or control subassembly that is used in both the closed and open nozzle options, and which forms the top portion of the fuel injector. The second subassembly is a nozzle assembly and is form in two versions, an open nozzle version and a closed nozzle version, either of which can be used with the timing assembly. In a preferred form of the timing subassembly, a pressure-responsive valve for opening a timing chamber draining passage is provided within the upper plunger.

  • Patent number: 5209403
Abstract: A high pressure unit fuel injector includes a timing chamber formed between upper and lower plungers of the injector for controlling the timing of injection. A timing chamber relief valve is provided for performing at least one of the functions of (1) draining timing fluid from the timing chamber during an injection stroke responsive to pressure in the timing chamber for maximizing the pressure of fuel in the injection chamber under low speed operating conditions without exceeding a pressure capability of the injector under high speed operating conditions, and (2) for collapsing the timing chamber in a controlled manner at termination of injection so as to prevent secondary injection from occurring. The relief valve structure is wholly formed above the lower plunger, preferably within the upper plunger above the timing chamber. Thereby, assembly and maintenance operations on the valve are facilitated.
