A phase image and intensity image corresponding to the same observation range on a cell culture plate (12), on which the cells to be observed are cultured, are displayed in the image display frames (121, 122), respectively. The wells on the plate, which are almost invisible on the phase image, are clearly visible on the intensity image. Conversely, the biological cells, which are almost invisible on the intensity image, are observable on the phase image.
