  • Patent number: 9202484
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to a MAMR head. The MAMR head includes an STO. The STO has a first surface at a media facing surface, and a portion of the first surface has a trapezoidal shape. Having this configuration, the acute angles of the trapezoidal shaped portion provide a greater width of the STO at the media facing surface, which protect the main pole from over-etching during the fabrication of the STO. In addition, the acute angles of the trapezoidal shaped portion of the first surface are large enough to keep a low STO driving voltage and provide the MAMR head with a long operation lifetime and higher reliability.

  • Patent number: 9135933
Abstract: Embodiments described herein provide an MAMR head structure which provides a magnetic recording device equipped with a high density recording magnetic head. Characteristic variations caused by misalignment of a main pole and a STO may be reduced because the STO may be aligned with a position on the main pole where the field intensity is enhanced. The enhanced field intensity may be provided by an angle of inclination ?1 of an inclined surface on which the STO may be formed when compared to an angle of inclination ?2 around the main pole in the region of the ABS. Further embodiments provide a method for producing an MAMR head in which an exposed surface of the main pole has an angle of inclination ?2 which is less than the angle of inclination ?1 for the inclined surface of the main pole where the STO is mounted.

  • Patent number: 9129621
Abstract: A microwave-assisted recording head comprises a main pole configured to emit a recording magnetic field for affecting a magnetic medium, the main pole serving as a first electrode and having a front portion at an air bearing surface (ABS) and a rear portion extending from the front portion. A microwave oscillator is positioned on a trailing side surface of the main pole. The trailing-side surface of the main pole forms a flat plane along the front and rear portions and is inclined with respect to a leading side surface at the front portion. The head body is inclined at an acute angle to the ABS, such that an acute angle, between 10 and 30 degrees, is formed between the trailing side surface of the main pole and the ABS.

  • Patent number: 9099113
Abstract: A disk drive slider supports a microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) write head with a spin-torque oscillator (STO) and a separate corrosion monitor (CM). The CM includes a corrosion detection layer formed of the same material as the STO's spacer layer. The CM is coplanar with the STO but laterally spaced from the STO. The corrosion detection layer has an edge at the ABS so as to be exposed to the same atmospheric conditions as the STO's spacer layer. Electrical leads are located at the ends of the CM and are electrically connected to pads on the upper surface of the slider. Electrical resistance of the CM is measured by detection of current in the plane of the corrosion detection layer.

  • Patent number: 8867178
Abstract: In one embodiment, a magnetic sensor comprises a read element and a magnetic-domain-control film positioned on both sides of the read element in a cross-track direction. The magnetic-domain-control film has a flare shape which causes the magnetic-domain-control film to flare away in an element height direction from the depthwise end of read element and extending in both directions away from the read element in a cross-track direction. In another embodiment, a method for forming a magnetic sensor includes forming a read element and forming a magnetic-domain-control film positioned on both sides of the read element in a cross-track direction, wherein the magnetic-domain-control film has a flare shape which causes the magnetic-domain-control film to flare away from the depthwise end of read element extending in both directions in a cross-track direction.

  • Patent number: 8837086
Abstract: A magnetic recording head used for microwave-assisted magnetic recording includes: a main pole; a spin torque oscillator provided on the main pole, including a high-speed rotating magnetization layer in which the magnetization is rapidly rotated by a spin torque; a trailing shield provided on the spin torque oscillator; and a sub pole magnetically coupled to the trailing shield provided in a medium-facing surface, extending in a vertical direction to the medium-facing surface. Then, a non-magnetic electrode is provided on the outside of a trailing gap in which the spin torque oscillator is provided with respect to a magnetic material of the main pole, the trailing shield, or the sub pole, to prevent the line resistance variation due to the AMR effect or the eddy current. Thus, the variation of the current flowing to the spin torque oscillator can be controlled to achieve stable oscillation.
