    Abstract: A rectifier circuit for rectifying an AC voltage supplied from a commercial power supply into a DC voltage, a smoothing capacitor for smoothing the output of the rectifier circuit, and an electrically powered tool for supplying the smoothed pulsating DC voltage to a motor by an inverter circuit, wherein when the motor is driven while no load is being applied to a tip tool, the smoothed DC voltage repeatedly generates a maximal value and a minimum value so as to synchronize with the fluctuation in the AC voltage. During no-load rotation, control is performed so that driving is performed at a value that is less than a threshold value D1 for the duty ratio at which the generation of a gear sound starts in any of the speed dial setting values 1-6. It is thereby possible to suppress a gear sound generated by a power transmission mechanism during no-load rotation.

    Abstract: A power tool is provided such that noise can be reduced at a wide range of rotation speeds. A speed setting dial to be operated by a worker is disposed on a rear end part of a housing of a grinder. A control part controls driving of a motor by setting the rotation speed of the motor in response to the value of a speed setting signal which indicates a value (voltage) corresponding to an amount of rotation of the speed setting dial by the worker. Although the control part basically causes the rotation speed of the motor to change continuously in response to the rotation amount of the speed setting dial, the control part sets the rotation speed of the motor while avoiding a predetermined rotation speed region in which the noise level is increased due to mechanical and acoustic resonances.

When an operation switch 5 is turned off, a control unit 50 detects a rotation rate R1 of an electric motor 6. The control unit 50 stands by for a prescribed period, detects a rotation rate R2 of the electric motor 6, and calculates the difference between the rotation rates R1, R2 (R=R1?R2). Since the rotation rate difference R corresponds to the rate of change in rotation rate with time during deceleration of the electric motor 6 and is smaller the larger the moment of inertia of the attached rotary tool, the control unit 50 can determine the moment of inertia of the rotary tool on the basis of the rotation rate difference R. The control unit 50 sets the braking force according to the moment of inertia and performs braking.
