  • Patent number: 6542782
Abstract: Systems and methods of operating the same are introduced for populating and using lookup tables with process facility control systems and models of the same. An exemplary computer system for use with a process facility having a plurality of associated processes, and includes both a memory and a processor. The memory is capable of maintaining (i) a data structure having a plurality of accessible fields and (ii) a model of at least a portion of the plurality of associated processes. The model may include a mathematical representation of at least a portion of the at least one process, defining certain relationships among inputs and outputs of the at least one process. The processor is capable of populating ones of the plurality of accessible fields of the data structure using the model iteratively with a range of possible values of the at least one measurable characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6347254
Abstract: Controllers and methods of operating the same are introduced for use with a process facility that includes a plurality of associated processes. An exemplary controller includes circuitry that maintains a range of possible values of at least one measurable characteristic associated with at least one process of the plurality of associated processes, and a processor. The processor is capable of selecting at least one value of the range of possible values from the circuitry in response to one of an input or an output of the at least one process, and generating control data as a function of the selected at least one value of the range of possible values and the input or the output of the at least one process. The controller is capable of using the control data to manage the at least one process.

  • Patent number: 6253113
Abstract: The present invention provides a processing system that is capable of achieving substantially optimal control performance of a process facility on a “worst case” process system by accounting for changing system dynamics. The processing system includes a storage device and a processor. The storage device is operable to represent (i) at least one of a plurality of associated processes mathematically to define the various relationships among different inputs and outputs of the one or more represented associated processes, and (ii) uncertainty factors that are associated with these defined relationships. The uncertainty factors define a range of dynamics across which the one or more represented associated processes operate, an error in the mathematical representation, or, alternatively, some combination of the same.

  • Patent number: 5561599
Abstract: A process control system having a feedback controller, at least one manipulated variable and one controlled variable with a feedforward loop is provided. Independent feedforward control is incorporated into the feedback controller by defining a feedforward control funnel and a feedback control funnel for each controlled variable, specifying a time T.sub.FF in which the disturbance is to be eliminated and a time T.sub.FB in which the controlled variable is to reach a steady state value, respectively. The shorter of the feedforward control funnel and the feedback control funnel is selected. If T.sub.FF is less than T.sub.FB, the feedback control speed is compensated such that the feedback controller speed is not increased. If T.sub.FF is greater then or equal to T.sub.FB, no compensation is performed, thereby effectively providing independent tuning parameters for the feedforward control solution and the feedback control solution.
