  • Publication number: 20140168172
Abstract: Embodiments of a capacitive disk unit for a stylus for a capacitive touchscreen are disclosed. A conductive coupler has a flat proximal face and a socket for receiving a ball joint on its distal end. The distal portion of the socket may comprise a plurality of thin fingers that flex to capture the ball, forming notches between the fingers that are wide enough for the stylus shaft to pass into them, allowing the body of the stylus to be moved to a lower angle to the conductive coupler. Conductivity between the unit and the stylus is maintained continuously. If a larger diameter conductive surface is necessary, it may further comprise a disk and conductive layer, which may both be transparent. The conductive coupler may be molded of conductive polymer, and the disk may be overmolded using transparent polymer. Lack of metal parts reduces complexity, cost, and manufacturing defect risks.

  • Publication number: 20130323941
Abstract: Embodiments of magnetic connectors are disclosed. Embodiments show the use of magnetic connectors for power and/or signal bus coupling to electronic devices from support bases, stands, or cables. In some embodiments, spherical contacts, such as ball bearings, are pressed into firm contact with an electronic device by the use of conductive springs, which in turn electrically couple the spherical contacts to the bus lines. Contact arrangements are shown which allow rotation of the electronic device against an embodiment of magnetic connector. Arrangements of multiple magnets having differing polarities are shown when alignment of an electronic device in a particular orientation is required.

  • Publication number: 20130257793
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for differentiating between stylus touches and non-stylus touches on a touchscreen device. A stylus emits a signal, received by the touchscreen device, and software selects a touch, the touch start event for which occurred near the time of the signal, and the size and location of which best fit filters, as being the touch made by the stylus. The software associates that touch with the stylus until the touch ends, or until the stylus emits a signal indicating that contact has ended. The signal may be mechanically generated audio, such as from the stylus contacting the screen, or electronic (audio, RF, IR), generated by the stylus upon detecting pressure or capacitive flux. The methods and systems allow software to perform palm rejection filtering, to track one stylus or multiple styluses, and to ignore touches triggered by dirt, rain, and other environmental causes.

  • Patent number: 8467186
Abstract: A cover for a tablet PC with an integral keyboard provides two outer covering faces and a resilient mounting frame fixing a tablet PC therein, hinged on a keyboard component. By hinging partway along one outer covering face, the mounting frame can assume a wide variety of angles. The keyboard component has embedded within its underside a ferromagnetic member attracted by an embedded metal strip in the other covering face, fixing the keyboard and mounting frame at any desired angle. The resilient mounting frame has an ejection assembly opposite the hinging of the resilient mounting frame and keyboard component, allowing one-handed release of the tablet PC, and an embedded implant corresponding to and detectable by a configurable circuit board encased in the keyboard component.

  • Patent number: 8432509
Abstract: A display housing for a portable computing device that utilizes a plastic cover bonded to an internal metal frame is described. To account for thermal cycling issues and in particular to prevent bond slippage, multiple types of adhesives are employed to join the metal frame and the plastic cover. In particular, a very high bond (VHB) adhesive material is used in certain areas to bond the metal inner frame to the plastic cover and a liquid adhesive is used in other areas. The plastic cover can be translucent to light. A method of coating the plastic cover to block light, such as from a backlight used for the display, is described.

  • Publication number: 20120327044
Abstract: A stylus assembly for a capacitive touch screen provides input via conventional handwriting action. A stylus is attached at a contact end to a disc providing ample capacitive proximity with the touch screen. A layer of capacitive material is embedded within the disc, and may be formed with a distinct shape, layout, or outline to provide a uniquely recognizable capacitive signature. The stylus terminates at the contact end in a received portion, attached to the disc by a receiving portion formed thereon. Free rotation of the received portion within the receiving portion accepts positioning of the stylus body at any angle with no degradation of capacitive proximity, allowing natural handwriting action. The receiving portion can be formed with sufficient flexibility to allow disengagement and re-engagement thereof, enabling simple and low-cost replacement of the disc.

  • Patent number: 8201687
Abstract: A cover for a tablet PC provides protection to the body while allowing free access to a touch screen and other controls. The cover has an integrally connected keyboard or other input device which can be simply deployed for use, allowing conventional keyboard- or other-based input to the PC. When not in use the input device can be stowed at the rear of the cover, complementing device protection thereto. The cover further provides support elements allowing the PC to be situated for use on a horizontal surface, with the actual angle of situation adjustable to meet individual needs. When not needed or for transport, the support elements collapse and are received within the cover. In addition, the cover allows the PC to be situated, with the input device deployed or otherwise, in either a landscape or portrait orientation.

  • Publication number: 20120034482
Abstract: A flexible planar carrier bears an aerosol-producing fire extinguishing composition. The carrier can be an integral part of the composition when saturated with a solution that, upon combustion of the prepared carrier, produces fire extinguishing aerosol, or can bear the composition, providing structural support and/or thermal insulation, depending on requirements of the specific application. The carrier may have a thermal insulating layer applied on the mounting side, insulating the mounting surface and the prepared material, and may further have a hydrophobic layer applied at least on its active surface. The flexible planar carrier enables a stable, workable application of the composition to be easily deployed along any planar surface, providing instant low-impact extinguishment of flames over a wide area.
