Patent number: 11802851Abstract: Disclosed are method and apparatus for measuring material properties. Segmented field sensors have multiple sensing elements at different spatial geometries to capture field components having substantially different depths of penetration. These sensors are excited and measured on these different sensing elements to facilitate characterization of unknown material properties. This is illustrated in some embodiments using eddy current sensors to characterize materials that are frequency dispersive and/or do not produce a measurable phase shifts. Only a single scalar quantity may provide independent information from one or more of the sensing elements. Property estimation techniques, such as those using precomputed databases of sensor responses are used to estimate the unknown material properties.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2022Date of Patent: October 31, 2023Assignee: JENTEK Sensors, Inc.Inventors: Neil J. Patent number: 11768006Abstract: A control system is provided for controlling heating and/or cooling with a conditioning load such as fan coils and chilled beams. Based on user input and ambient conditions, the control system determines a desired temperature for the liquid entering the load and combines fresh supply liquid (e.g., from a chiller or boiler) with a portion of the liquid that has passed through the load, to achieve the target load input temperature for the liquid. A recirculation pump may be used to return a portion of the liquid exiting the load for mixing with the fresh supply liquid and a control valve may be used to adjust the ratio of fresh supply liquid and recirculated liquid to achieve the targeted temperature. The control systems can be compatible with a variety of liquid supply systems such as two- and four-pipe systems.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2022Date of Patent: September 26, 2023Assignee: FT Energy Controls, LLCInventors: Richard Furman, Zachary M. Publication number: 20230221031Abstract: A system and terminal unit are provided for efficiently and effectively conditioning indoor air. Some embodiments address temperature control, humidity control, air quality control, while also introducing conditioned outdoor air. One aspect relates to a terminal unit that monitors and controls sensible and latent cooling rates to simultaneously meet temperature and humidity setpoints for the conditioned space. A sensor suite provides measurements for monitoring cooling rates and a control system controls actuators to meet the sensible and latent cooling requirements. The terminal unit may have a secondary recirculation air intake that bypasses the cooling coil to warm supply air prior to exiting the terminal unit. The terminal unit may be part of an air conditioning system where it is connected to a main branch of a hybrid branch controller which avoids having a home run to the HBC for each terminal unit.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2023Publication date: July 13, 2023Applicant: FT Energy Controls, LLCInventors: Richard C. Publication number: 20220341875Abstract: A system and method are provided for performing a hole inspection performance study. Specimens for the performance study are made from a reconfigurable set of inspection plates. Each plate includes multiple test holes which are located symmetrically. The plates may be of various thicknesses and materials. Each test hole may or may not have a feature such as a crack or machining notch. Such features may be located at various positions of the hole, such as at an edge, within the bore, and at various circumferential positions. A specimen is formed by stacking two or more plates and securing the stack together with an alignment tool. A variety of specimens may be formed by using different combinations of inspection plates and flipping and rotating the member plates. A hole inspection system is disclosed as well as an inspection procedure and data processing algorithm for inspecting each hole.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2022Publication date: October 27, 2022Applicant: JENTEK Sensors, Inc.Inventors: Stuart Chaplan, Neil Goldfine, Zachary M. Publication number: 20220154972Abstract: A terminal unit is provided for cooling a conditioned space. The terminal unit is provided conditioned air and augments cooling with a local heat exchanger. The terminal unit controls the flow of coolant through the heat exchanger. Latent cooling provided by the conditioned air is augmented by allowing moisture accumulation on the heat exchanger. The terminal unit lacks a drainage system so deleterious moisture accumulation (e.g., dripping) is avoided by monitoring moisture accumulation and controlling the terminal unit accordingly. If the moisture accumulation is below a threshold, the terminal unit is permitted to provide latent cooling locally. If the moisture accumulation is above a threshold, the terminal unit prevents further local latent cooling. Some sensor configurations allow for calculation of air flow rates, the latent cooling rate, and moisture accumulation. This information is used to achieve the desired room conditions more rapidly and precisely.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 18, 2021Publication date: May 19, 2022Applicant: Chilled Beam Controls, LLCInventors: Richard C. Publication number: 20180264590Abstract: A sensor is provided near an additive manufacturing (AM) part during fabrication to provide information about the condition of the additive material during fabrication. Sensor measurements are used for in situ monitoring and control of the AM system. By placing a sensor at this location, information at or near this location may be collected and then analyzed to determine if the AM process is proceeding acceptably, or if real-time modifications to the process should be made to improve the performance of the process. Conditions monitored by the sensor may include the melt pool dimensions, the temperature ahead of and at the melt pool, properties of the powder bed such as temperature and particle size distribution, local powder conditions, prior layer condition, and applied layer condition behind the laser. A control system uses these monitored conditions to adjust and control the ongoing AM fabrication process.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2018Publication date: September 20, 2018Applicant: JENTEK Sensors, Inc.Inventors: Neil J.
