  • Patent number: 6996368
Abstract: A method reduces power consumption in a multi-hop wireless communications network including a plurality of nodes. At a source node, a first power requirement for relaying a signal to a destination node through an intermediate node using an amplification mode is determined. A second power requirement for relaying the signal the destination node through the intermediate node using a regeneration mode is also determined at the source node. A relay request message is transmitted to the intermediate node, the relay request message including the first and second power requirements.

  • Patent number: 6954650
Abstract: A method determines mobility characteristics of a mobile terminal by measuring a first and second angular direction of travel of the mobile terminal at a first and second instant. The first angular direction is subtracted form the second angular direction to determine the directivity of the mobile terminal during an interval of time between the first instant and the second instant. The directivity, in terms of a mean, variance, or histogram can be used to classify the mobile terminal, and location-aware services can be adapted and delivered according to the classification.

  • Patent number: 6925502
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided to improve the data transmission rate of a system executing an network protocol such as TCP, by adapting the protocol according to an error rate of the system. The technique includes first establishing a connection between a receiver and transmitter according to the network protocol including establishing a data window size, the window size being an indicator of the amount of data the receiver can receive. As data segments are received, the receiver counts the number of data segments received as well the number of errored octets produced by the physical layer of the network over specified time periods. For each time period, the receiver determines whether the window size of the receiver should be changed to improve the data communication rate based on the previous window size, the number of segments received and the number of errors measured.

  • Publication number: 20050135379
Abstract: The invention is a routing method for data in a personal area network. The personal area network includes a plurality of nodes. The method includes receiving a frame at a node, determining whether the node contains a routing table entry for the frame destination, and when the node contains a routing table entry, determining a route for the frame based on a first routing protocol. The method further includes, when the node does not contain a routing table entry for the frame destination, determining whether a route should be discovered for the frame destination, and when a route should not be discovered, determining a route for the frame based on a second routing protocol.

  • Publication number: 20050111428
Abstract: An ad-hoc wireless communication network includes multiple nodes. Each node maintains a routing table. The routing table is constructed by broadcasting route request packets from a source node. The request packet includes an address of a destination node. Intermediate nodes in the network receiving the request packet, determine power and delay cost associated with the intermediate node participating in the route. If the cost is less than a threshold value, then the intermediate node participates in the routing of packets for other nodes. The intermediate node then sends a reply packet back to the source node. The reply packet includes the intermediate node addresses, as well as the power and delay costs. The source can thus construct the routing table. The source node can select a particular node for transferring application data packets based on either the power cost, the delay cost or both costs.

  • Patent number: 6885969
Abstract: A method locates a mobile node in a partially synchronized wireless network comprised of nodes with heterogeneous communication ranges. The time intervals it takes for messages to travel from stationary nodes at known location to a mobile node at an unknown location are measured and used to determine a set of possible coordinates of the mobile node. This time-based set of coordinates is in the form of a hyperbolic function. The received signal strengths of a message received from the mobile node is measured in two additional stationary nodes at known location. These RSS-based measurements provide two more sets of possible coordinates of the mobile node. The three sets are then intersected to estimate the location of the mobile node.

  • Publication number: 20050063314
Abstract: A method selects source and channel codec parameters according to varying channel conditions and signal to noise ratio for a given distortion constraint. The processes of source and channel encoding and decoding with the selected parameter values and transmit power level per quality layer minimize a total energy consumption for delivery of multimedia content from a transmitting terminal to a receiving terminal. The total energy consumption is defined as the energy consumed while processing and transmitting the multimedia. Coding parameters, such as channel code rates, error resilience redundancy, unequal error protection level, and transmit power level can vary from layer to layer.

  • Publication number: 20050036486
Abstract: A route from a source node to a destination is discovered in an ad hoc network by having the source node generate a data packet including its source address, the destination address, and a field indicating that the source node requests route information from the source node to the destination node. The data packet is forwarded through the network until the data packet is received by the destination node. In response, the destination node generates a route reply packet including the route information. The route information can include a cost. The route reply packet is forwarded through the network until the route reply packet is received by the source node. During the forwarding, multiple route reply packets can be generated with different costs. The source node can then make cost calculations to select a best route based on the costs.

  • Patent number: 6853848
Abstract: A method classifies a mobile terminal by a-periodically obtaining locations of the mobile terminal. Location update intervals are determined from update times associated with the locations. Frequency characteristics are generated from the location update intervals, and a probability distribution function is generated from the location update interval. Then, the mobile terminal is classified according to the frequency characteristics and the probability distribution function.

  • Publication number: 20040203851
Abstract: A system delivers multimedia services to mobile devices via a network by first registering a mobile device with a service manager connected to the mobile device via the network. Application service providers are connected to the service manager via the network. Each application service provider is associated with particular multimedia services. An environment description to be associated with the mobile device is acquired, and a particular application service provider is identified according to the environment description, and then selected services provided by the particular application service provider are delivered to the mobile device according to the environment description via the network.

  • Publication number: 20040142716
Abstract: A system and method reduce power consumption in a multi-hop wireless communications network. A signal is received from a source node in an intermediate node. The signal includes a request to relay a message to a destination node. The request includes information on power requirements to relay the message either in a relay mode or a regeneration mode. If the available power at the intermediate node exceeds the power requirements, then the request is accepted. Either the relay mode or the regeneration mode is selected, based on criteria for retransmitting the message, and the message is then relayed to the destination node using the selected mode.

  • Patent number: 6759946
Abstract: A network enables remote users to communicate with, and to control a variety of devices whose only electrical connection is to a power line network. In hybrid networks, communications between different network domains is only available if proper message mapping is done. Message mapping leads to the determination of correct frame conversion based on the specifications of protocols identifying different networks. This invention comprises a method that does bi-directional conversion between application level information entered into the remote access device by the user and related physical layer power line communications frames.

  • Publication number: 20030235208
Abstract: With multiple predictors, a method dynamically allocates bandwidth to traffic having a variable data rate in a network. A first amount P-I of bandwidth is allocated in a first state of a state machine. A second amount P-II of bandwidth is allocated in a second state of the state machine, and a third amount of bandwidth P-III is allocated in a a third state of the state machine such that P-II>P-I>P-III. Cost functions are periodically evaluated to transition between the first, second, and third states of the state machine.

  • Publication number: 20030156543
Abstract: A method and system connects a first terminal via multiple networks to a second terminal. An environment description is acquired and parsed by a description parser into cost parameters using a set of rules. An objective function evaluates the cost parameters to determine an optimal path to connect the first terminal to the second terminal through the multiple networks using a switch. The selection of the optimal path can be done periodically during a particular application session.

  • Publication number: 20030021295
Abstract: A method dynamically allocates bandwidth for traffic having a variable data rate in a network. A data rate of the traffic received from the network is measured during fixed length time intervals. A predetermine number of consecutive data rates are grouped into overlapping vectors. A discrete wavelet transform is applied to each overlapping vector to determine frequency bands for each vector, and the frequency bands of each vector are analyzed to determine an associated energy of the data rate. Then, the bandwidth is allocated to the traffic according to the associated energy when the traffic is transmitted.
