    Abstract: A system, wireless device (102) and method improve speaker intelligibility in a multi-party call by receiving a plurality of individual voice signals, determining a pitch contour for each individual voice signal, determining that the pitch contours for at least two of the individual voice signals are within a predetermined range relative to each other, and shifting the pitch of at least one voice signal a predetermined amount for the duration of the call. The pitch of the individual voice is shifted one to approximately five semitones. The method is performed at a central control station (110) prior to summation of the signals, or at an individual receiving unit (204) when three or more wireless devices (102) are communicating without the use of a central control station (110).

The device (306) then initiates a registration sequence with a second wireless communication system if the device (306) has detected the triggering event, determines the speed and/or displacement of the device (306), and conducts any present and subsequent calls via the second wireless communication system if the speed and/or displacement of the device exceeds a predetermined threshold. The registration sequence may be aborted if at least one of the speed and displacement of the device (306) does not exceed predetermined thresholds. Movement of the device (306) may be determined by an accelerometer (314) or GPS chipset.

    Abstract: A fax selective call receiver system (10) featuring compression of a fax message with an optimal one of a plurality of compression code-books (50). At least a portion (44) of a source document (26) is compressed with each of a plurality of code-books (50) and the smallest resulting data file is selected as the optimal compressed file. The compressed data file is transmitted to a selective call receiver (40) together with an index identifying the optimal code-book. The selective call receiver (40) stores each of the plurality of code-books and accesses the particular code-book for decompressing the data file on the basis of the received index. In an alternative embodiment, the fax message is divided into composing segments (SI1, SI2 and SI3) and each segment is compressed with each code-book to determine the optimal code-book for each segment.

    Abstract: A selective call receiver system includes a plurality of base sites capable of simultaneous operation. Each base site includes a transmitter and a base receiver capable of measuring the signal strength of a received signal. A controller coupled to the plurality of base sites, forwards an address to the plurality of base sites. The transmitters thereafter, simultaneously transmit the address to at least one of a plurality of selective call receivers having acknowledge-back capability. At least one of the plurality of base receivers receive an acknowledge-back signal from the at least one of the selective call receivers responding to the transmitted address. The signal strength of the acknowledge-back signal is detected by the plurality of base receivers receiving the acknowledge-back signal.
