Patent number: 10070115Abstract: An innovative method for synthesis of compressed light fields is described. Compressed light fields are commonly generated by sub-sampling light field views. The suppressed views must then be synthesized at the display, utilizing information from the compressed light field. The present invention describes a method for view synthesis that utilizes depth information of the scene to reconstruct the absent views. An innovative view merging method coupled with an efficient hole filling procedure compensates for depth misregistrations and inaccuracies to produce realistic synthesized views for full parallax light field displays.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2016Date of Patent: September 4, 2018Assignee: Ostendo Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Danillo Bracco Graziosi, Zahir Y. Patent number: 9930272Abstract: Spatio-temporal light field cameras that can be used to capture the light field within its spatio temporally extended angular extent. Such cameras can be used to record 3D images, 2D images that can be computationally focused, or wide angle panoramic 2D images with relatively high spatial and directional resolutions. The light field cameras can be also be used as 2D/3D switchable cameras with extended angular extent. The spatio-temporal aspects of the novel light field cameras allow them to capture and digitally record the intensity and color from multiple directional views within a wide angle. The inherent volumetric compactness of the light field cameras make it possible to embed in small mobile devices to capture either 3D images or computationally focusable 2D images. The inherent versatility of these light field cameras makes them suitable for multiple perspective light field capture for 3D movies and video recording applications.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2015Date of Patent: March 27, 2018Assignee: Ostendo Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Hussein S. Publication number: 20170184776Abstract: Emissive micro-pixel spatial light modulators with non-telecentric emission are introduced. The individual light emission from each multi-color micro-scale emissive pixel is directionally modulated in a unique direction to enable application-specific non-telecentric emission pattern from the micro-pixel array of the emissive spatial light modulator. Design methods for directionally modulating the light emission of the individual micro-pixels using micro-pixel level optics are described. Monolithic wafer level optics methods for fabricating the micro-pixel level optics are also described. An emissive multi-color micro-pixel spatial light modulator with non-telecentric emission is used to exemplify the methods and possible applications of the present invention: ultra-compact image projector, minimal cross-talk 3D light field display, multi-view 2D display, and directionally modulated waveguide optics for see-through near-eye displays.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2016Publication date: June 29, 2017Inventors: Hussein S. Publication number: 20170142427Abstract: A compression method for high-resolution light field display is disclosed for applications in which computer memory constraints and latency are critical. The disclosed compression algorithm takes advantage of the 3D structure of a light field to compress the raw light field information with a fixed compression ratio and simple decoding instructions. The compressed high-resolution light field achieves a reduced bandwidth with acceptable quality, and is packed in a way that can be transmitted using common interfaces. In a preferred embodiment, the compression algorithm is used as a post-processing stage after light field information acquisition or after rendering. In a further preferred embodiment, the compression algorithm is incorporated into the acquisition or rendering procedure to reduce memory and rendering processing. These and further embodiments generate a compressed light field with all information required for direct display.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2016Publication date: May 18, 2017Inventors: Danillo Bracco Graziosi, Zahir Y. Publication number: 20160021355Abstract: Preprocessing of the light field input data for full parallax compressed light field 3D display systems is described. The described light field input data preprocessing can be utilized to format or extract information from input data, which can then be used by the light field compression system to further enhance the compression performance, reduce processing requirements, achieve real-time performance and reduce power consumption. This light field input data preprocessing performs a high-level 3D scene analysis and extracts data properties to be used by the light field compression system at different stages. As a result, rendering of redundant data is avoided while at the same rendering quality is improved.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 14, 2015Publication date: January 21, 2016Inventors: Zahir Y. Publication number: 20150201176Abstract: A compressed light field imaging system is described. The light field 3D data is analyzed to determine optimal subset of light field samples to be (acquired) rendered, while the remaining samples are generated using multi-reference depth-image based rendering. The light field is encoded and transmitted to the display. The 3D display directly reconstructs the light field and avoids data expansion that usually occurs in conventional imaging systems. The present invention enables the realization of full parallax 3D compressed imaging system that achieves high compression performance while minimizing memory and computational requirements.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 7, 2015Publication date: July 16, 2015Inventors: Danillo B.
