It includes contacting the Cystoseira canariensis with a solvent to extract a fraction comprising at least one sulfated polysaccharide. The method preferably is carried out as a multiple stage extraction. A method also is provided for producing Cystoseira canariensis. This method includes (a) obtaining a Cystoseira canariensis starting material, and (b) growing the Cystoseira canariensis starting material in a vessel containing a liquid growth medium comprising water to produce the Cystoseira canariensis.
